So now we're officially 3 months into the year, I've done a quick recap and I've realized I'm already 4 new watches in... ๐ 2 in hand already, and 2 in-transit.
I'm relatively new to watches (less than a year), so quick question to those experienced collectors out there: did you all start similarly? Seen so many you liked (for aesthetics, for the movement, for the history, whatever reason), and started collecting quite quickly? Do any of you regret how you started this hobby, or do you see it more as your 'formative years', learning lessons along the way?
All opinions and advice is welcome! Thanks all!

Welcome to the rabbit hole ๐.
I'm pretty new as well only a couple of years. I went a bit silly this year and bought more watches than I needed. Sold them all and now have a small collection of 4.
We can all go a bit silly at times and just buy watches, but whatever makes you happy and you can afford is all that matters.
Enjoy it and have fun. Don't let others sway your watch collecting.
Only you know what you like. You will go through different stages and might not buy for a while.
Anyway enough waffle from me.๐.
Good to have you with us
Gotcha! ๐

Know where youโre coming from ๐ Started out about a year ago, bought one watch per month. Did slow down โ just the one watch in Jan and Feb! And may get through March with just the one watch for this year as well! But yeah, in the beginning, you want a dress watch, a diver, a beater, a yellow dial one, a green dial one, a GMT, a fun watch, a gold watchโฆetc, etc, etcโฆ.i think that after 10 or so itโs time to take stock and start pacing yourself. Only add really different / special pieces you know will stay in the collection and rotation. Other than that, I have no wise lessons to impart - just glad that I still really like each of the watches I added, from a humble Scurfa to an elegant VC. No buyerโs regret ๐

I had a chat with my wife about this this morning. Came to the same conclusion: given our agreed budget for my hobby, it's not silly to be buying the watches I like right now. Don't need to think too hard about each one, as long as I know why I like it.
If in the future we're in a position where we're able to perhaps loosen up the budget a little, and I can start looking at 500usd+ watches... Time to have a little more thought and philosophy go into the collection. What do you reckon?

I think given my current budget (low, with very low contributions towards the 'watch fund' every fortnight), I don't need to overthink too much. Just buy the wee pieces I like, enjoy them as I can, and in the future if I want to knuckle down for some bigger pieces (eg. 500usd+), I can apply more thought to it. ๐ค

Very true. Not everyone's journey but that's the journey I feel I'm on ATM.
Setting my goal on 1 nice piece down this year. ๐
