Long term brand support?

How valuable is brand support long term? Are brands supporting existing & past products? Some brands do it better than others. I think the number of misses maters. Nomos didn’t do themselves any favors with their California dial for instance. They are better than that but will now need to demonstrate it for a longer period of time. Tudor knocked it out of the park with the BB & Pelagos. Now they simply need to do fine tweaks like color, size & materials. This supports the designs previously offered. That keeps the costmers happy as well as secondary markets. New designs for old companies can be seen as evidence of a mistake. Cartier, Rolex, and others know this. So when people have ideas about improving watch design they must consider trends both current and past. Pic Forbes ~2017

Just shows how different tastes are, I love the Cali dial on the NOMOS and really dislike the whole Bland Bay range (do have a soft spot for the Pelegos,if only it wasn't titanium)

Long term support is pretty critical for me, one of the reasons I don't do microbrands.

I think that in a certain sense you are right, Nomos is more than a California Dial but many like it and I don't see anything bad in it, Tudor I like their BB line but I think they have already abused it for many years and now they will do it with Pelagos, they are making Pelagos that for me are no longer Pelagos. I already have the 42 with its own caliber and I am very happy that I would never change it for one of those small ones that are coming out now. You hit the nail on the head with Rolex, people (haters) say that they don't innovate and that's what I love to see a Rolex from the 70s that doesn't look old right now because the new one is the same, with better materials and slight changes in the design

Support is important. Rolex has been great about servicing my modern and vintage models. That said they can be a bit prickly in what they will and won’t do especially with dial and hands. I had to go with an independent watchmaker to a repair a busted crown on my coke gmt because in the estimation they would only do the service if they also swapped out the dial which they saw as defective. I liked the patina on it though so….

When you say “support”, do you mean (1) supporting the servicing of watches down the road (say, servicing my FXD in 2040) or do you mean (2) maximizing the # of winning designs and minimizing “misses”?

I was thinking of (1) when I saw the title, and (2) after reading your description…

I mean they indirectly support prior models by not stepping all over a design or selling cheaper, or letting go of a trend to soon. It’s one thing to have a popular watch for a season. It’s another to have a popular watch for a decade. Add up a decade worth of watch making and then do an evaluation from there.

I just looked at Nomos website. There isn’t a California dial to be found on the main page. The company has spoken I think. It’s a classy outlier. It made me question their capacity to build a brand a few years ago. Today I would say they are one of the best “new” brands.
