Affordable Open-Worked Options?

Over the last few months I’ve been slowly getting a good friend of mine more into watches. After getting his feet wet with some Casios, he’s ready to level up. He has his eyes on a Hamilton Open Heart, which is a great option IMO. Mechanical curiosity, nice movement, good value.

My question: are there any other open-worked watches in a similar style he should take a look at? Hopefully in the same $1K range or less. Thanks!

Look at Seiko‘s sister brand — Orient

I can suggest you to take a look into 4 brands.

Seiko, with their presage line:

Tissot and Frederique Constant:

And finally Rado with the "affordable" skeletonized dial (and ceramic construction!):

BTW, Rado and FC are usually more expensive than 1K, but please never pay full retail for these brands, try grey market like Jomashop.

I hope that helps!

Lots of good options here! The FC and the Rado’s really jump out to me

If I may comment, you will get bored quickly over open worked watches when going for the affordable options. It's "just" a gimmick and the beauty of open worked/skeleton watches comes from the manual engraving which... isn't affordable.

This might be the only segment where I wouldn't recommend looking for affordable options.

Hey Marc, appreciate the insight, and to be honest I totally agree. But the watch isn’t for me, just looking for options for a friend. and since he’s new to the hobby, just want to support his enthusiasm. If he sells it in a few years after learning more, all the better.

Then that's probably THE case where it does actually make sense to go for such a piece. I wouldn't be able to recommend any myself but I'm sure you'll find here great suggestions. Good luck with the hunt!
