Squale 20 Atmos 1545 Militaire

A few days ago I bought a Square 20 Atmos Militaire (Y1545), which takes its design clues from the Squale watch case design from the 1970s and incorporates elements of the Rolex Submariner Military (also from the 1970s). It is powered by the ETA 2824-2 movement.

For me, Squale has a very interesting history and offer a great collection of dive watches. I also have a 1521 that I really enjoy…

For this version of the 1545, I really appreciate the whole combination of the mat black dial with the Squale logos, the simplicity of the markers and the black sword hands that really highlight the lume (though the seconds hand is not the most visible). With its 40mm case size, it has a very wearable format, looking good on both the steel bracelet and the rubber strap. It kind of leads my thoughts to another watch in my collection.

Comparing the Squale directly to my Tudor BB58 is probably not fair, as the Tudor is at a different level when it comes to finish, movement and price. However, they compliment each other well in my collection and to me they appeal to use in different situations. I think the  Squale 20 Atmos Militaire will stay!

Hi Lars! I'm not big on homages and wanted to get the 1521 (possibly the cosc version) or the Certina PH500M. Both of them quite large. Now though, Squale released the new 1545 in 40mm. I guess my question is: is the 1545 the same, in terms of quality as 1521? And how do they compare to more premium offerings, like your Tudor. Thank you so much for your time.

I have almost bought that watch on many occasions… just hasn’t fit anywhere in the collection yet.

I’m not really into “homages” either and if it wasn’t for Squale’s history, I doubt the 1545 would have ended up in my collection. When it comes to the quality or “luxury” feel, I find that the 1521 is a bit more refined and has more attention to detail than the 1545 that I own (just take a look at the two dials…). The 1521 is more of a true ‘modern’ diver with the larger dimension (in my humble opinion). The latest version of the 1545 with the new more interesting dial and no crown guards may be a different story - they sure look nice. Comparing either the of the Squales to the BB58 in terms of finish is not entirely fair. The finishing of the case, dial, hands etc is just a notch up (not to mention Tudor’s in house calibre), but they make you bleed money for the Tudor also. Don’t get me wrong - I think Squale offer a big bang for your money. I am already considering if the is room for one more Squale in the collection.

I know that feeling - I just tend to ignore it and work out the reasoning after I hit “buy”😂

I don’t know. It is not on the Squale website, but it might be available from a local distributor.
