NEWS: Citizen Series 8 GMT Release Information

Watch enthusiasts often crave innovation and novelty, although these traits can be challenging to market in the watch industry. Yet, the new models from Citizen seem to hit the mark by striking a balance between familiarity and novelty, reminiscent of popular Rolex GMT Master II models, but with distinct characteristics.

The new Citizen Series 8 880 Mechanical models introduce a GMT complication, a first for the collection. This line is known for its minimalist and unpretentious style and has enjoyed positive reception since its international launch a few years back.

The Series 8 880 GMT models are slightly larger at 41mm and feature textured dials inspired by the colors of fall in Japan. They are powered by the self-winding Caliber 9054, capable of showing three time zones simultaneously. Although these models do not set new standards for timekeeping, they are practical, daily wear watches with a 100m water resistance.

Fantastic release from Citizen; but referencing this hodinkee article, it feels like they are trying to nitpick for the sake of: https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/citizen-series-8-gmt

The dial is "busy"? This is all relative at best; if a textured dial is busy then GS must be the biggest sinner of the pack. I'll take this comment at face value 😬

In any case, I'm quite excited about how the Miyota 9075 is now making its appearance in many different watches. Will I buy this Citizen series 8? Not quite - I feel it is still too chunky from a design perspective, and I am waiting for more "rounded" and "svelte" options to emerge.

It’s a fine watch, but they want too much money for the specs on offer.

This is such a weird release by citizen. The movement and look, of course are very cool but they kinda did the weird integrated bracelet thing.

Like, it's already a pretty sizeable price to ask above their microbrand partners (Jack Mason at $1k and Traska at $700) and they they basically lock you into a proprietary strap system with none of the usual benefits. Like as far as I can tell, you can't actually buy straps from citizen to change the look up.

Like, I guess I'm glad they are plunging deeper into mechanical watch making but it's just a series of odd design choices.

As a general note, I think we have to see these in person. The Citizen Series 8 that this is derivative of wore large to me and this is even larger.

Oh I agree but the integrated bracelet deal is really a 2023 fad. It should die in 2023

I'm thinking more about this being like a counter to Grand Seiko than rather Seiko. I think this has been a target for a long time to shoot at all angles with Seiko. That Dial to me is straight knock out

Yeah that's why I wanted to make my own article because I think this Dial is a knock out. It's awesome to me

Citizen has spent too much time fighting with Seiko to pivot to GS now. If they want to do that, then they need to launch a high end brand. Otherwise it’s like Honda putting out a car to fight against a Lexus directly, instead of having a stablemate like Acura to try to do the same thing.

They have The Citizen to compete against GS. But the releases are very weird and too overpriced for nothing special. This is the new 0210 which got released along with these GMT models and priced at $6000. It has LJP movement which is certified for its accuracy but still nothing different or revolutionary to justify the price apart and the movement is only decently finished for this price. There is a limited edition with a 22k gold rotor but thats even more expensive.
