What % of your watch collection contain hype pieces or are in high demand?

For me it's around 20%. As my collecting journey has progressed, I notice that I've been leaning towards buying watches that almost everyone wants to buy if they get a chance to or are truly limited editions. What is it with wanting what other people can't have? I genuinely still do love the way the watch looks, but a significant part of me wanting to acquire it is because it is hype and everyone else wants it too.

Some examples that I tried to purchase myself with no luck include:

NOMOS Glashütte Weltzeit “The Hague Edition” (25 pieces).

I guess that I only have one hyped watch in my collection now, the new Rolex submariner no date 124060 that I bought at retail price.  I'm on the waitlists for a few others but I don't think that I will get them.  I gather that people like to get the hyped watches because (1) confirmation from others that such watches are highly desirable; (2) if buying at retail prices, the values would be higher than retails.  We feel good about the increased values, even we don't need to sell them to get the profits.

No hype watches here, at least I don't think so

A fair amount. It's a challenge for me - I love the hunt. I love the score of managing to acquire something that an average Joe like myself isn't supposed to be able to own at retail. Now that being said, it's getting harder every day and the amount of work and relationship building I've had to do all across the US is getting ridiculous. I'm fortunate that my work allows me to travel and I always make it a point to stop in anywhere I can. Has that paid off? Not really as most dealers are holding back inventory for local customers. I also won't spend a bunch of money hoping to get the call... but any AD that has allowed me to purchase pieces I've been hunting DOES get business from me on the other side. My collection is mostly Rolex and Omega - not because they are hot, but because I really do enjoy the designs.

What if you bought them before the hype years ago? 😜

·

None, 0% 😄!

·

I think only 2 of them, but I’m not really sure. I try to get what I love. If someone else is into it, that’s great.

·

None. One I ordered (have not received it yet) is a limited edition, but I doubt it will ever get hype status. Hype status would put me off, because I am not paying for that.

1. None percent.

2. Agree with uhrensohn.
