Discovering the Differences in my Citizens: NY0040-17L and BN0150-28E

I first purchased my first-ever Citizen back in September 2022, specifically the classic (relatively speaking) Eco-Drive Promaster that shares its looks with the automatic Fugu Promaster.

Just a couple weeks ago, I purchased an older generation Promaster automatic on sale from Jomashop. I had been wanting an automatic Promaster very soon after getting the Eco-Drive version, but they were always expensive even on Amazon.

The size difference was the first thing I noticed. I know on paper one is 44mm and the other is ~42mm, but it seems much more drastic once they are side by side.

The bezel on the automatic is much easier to grip and turn and almost gives the sense of a serrated circular saw blade compared to the Eco-Drive, which is much harder to get a grip on. I guess it balances out that the Eco-Drive has less resistance to turning to compensate for that.

The dial of the Eco-Drive is much larger and easier to read at a glance, but I enjoy the pop of color that the red text adds on the automatic version. I've seen some reviews on YouTube that complain that the NY0040 series look like a '90s watch and that is a bit of a drawback. I think it connects it more with its roots, being first introduced in the 1980s.

Overall, I'd say they each have their strengths and weaknesses. I enjoy them equally for being true tool diver's watches with serious pedigree to match.
