It is sad that many of us may not be able to feel this kind of ownership now with a Rolex. We would have at this point bought one on the grey market.  Even those who were fortunate enough to get one on retail would have a totally different mindset from Andrew.  There was never an afterthought of 'how much can I sell it" or "how much is it worth" as how we think now. 

But that doesn't mean that you can't have a history or story to tell with another watch.  Just that sometime we worry about banging up our timepieces and devaluing it instead of simply using it. That pretty much sums up  why people buys Rolex but are afraid to wear it.  That and the worry that the watch would get stolen.
