Watch Wasteland

What do you do with your out of cycle watches?

I imagine it’s similar to Toy Story when Andy doesn’t need the toys anymore because he’s older, he puts them out at a garage sale, and they look all sad. Even Andy has second thoughts.

Or I imagine it’s like the stereotypical man loves dog, dog loves man. Man can’t have dog, man leaves dog in the forest. Man and dog are sad, dog finds his way back to man, repeat.

Is that how our watches feel when we take them out of our rotation and put them back in their boxes? At least that’s what I imagine.

When it comes to watches that no longer get playing time, what do you guys do with them? Put them in the OG box? Shoe box? Random junk drawer? Leave them in your watch case? Sell, trade, gift?

I’m interested to know. I have a few “junkers” that sit in an old shoe box and I just retired my Citizen Chrono back to its original box.

If they are worth anything above about 500 bucks, I'll sell to help fund something else. Cheaper than that I tend to gift to someone who isn't into watches in an obvious hope of converting a new hobbiest

I put them back into their original box, and let them sit. If after 6-9 months of no activity, it’s time to sell. Otherwise I’ll bring it back into rotation if I still like the piece. This is unless it’s sentimental, then I’ll just hold onto it. I sold a piece that was sentimental, regret selling it, and then the guy modded it, so it was truly gone. Anyway, that’s my process.

You had to bring up Toy Story 😭

Who’s cutting onions?!

It's not a big problem for me yet, but I have a few watches laying around on the nightstand that I don't really wear anymore. I would like to get rid of them, but they're not worth much money and I worry selling them might be more of a hassle than it's worth.

I cue up Sarah McLauchlan’s I Will Remember You as I begin wrapping up my once cherished watch to gift to a loved one. I get the benefit of making my a family member happy, and seeing the watch occasionally.

ALSO… man doesn’t love dog and then just leave them in the forest… man gives into the adoring eyes of his newfound furry overlord. He sacrifices as many watches as possible for kibble. The End.
