Day 10 - A Watch a Day: Next up, another Hamilton. I got this at Macy's (we're talking the original flagship at Herald Square). I saw this one on clearance for 50% off (I think it was the display unit), so I grabbed it. Everyone knows Hamilton for their field watches, but they have some very nice dress watches that get little attention, with interesting designs that are distinctively Hamilton. I find the skeleton dial intriguing, and now that I have it on wrist again, I'm staring at it a lot. Yes, it could use more (or any) AR coating.

And about Macy's and watches, even as recently as 2020, Macy's had a quite a large watch department, with lots of fashion watches, but some "real" brands too. They had a Hamilton counter with quite an extensive collection, I would guess the biggest, or close to it, in New York. Hamilton was the first brand to grab my attention, so I tried on a bunch of watches there. Since then, the watch department has shrunk steadily, and with it the Hamilton collection, along with other brands. The watch department is always very quiet, even when the rest of the store is bustling. I don't think the watch collection is long for this world; I've heard that Macy's elsewhere have dropped watches altogether. I take this as a sign of the state of the sub $1000 "affordable" watch market. The narrative is that it's been declining for years, with various reports showing a steady drop in sales on the low end, and meanwhile robust growth on the high end. I take the state of Macy's as a sign of that.
