Memories in watches

This was a gift, given to me by my wife’s side of the family after her grandfather died. Which in itself is a huge honour. He would never be without a watch, nothing fancy, he wasn’t interested in fancy. I remember for his 85th birthday my wife and I bought him a new watch - an elegant square Rotary watch. He tried to refuse the gift saying it was “too much”. I never saw him wear another one after that and he was buried in it. I got to spend 10 years in this man’s company, I loved talking to him - originally from the Republic of Ireland he was a self made man who came to the U.K. and provided for his family. We recorded some conversations my father in law had with him before he passed and the family cherish’s these now too.

His way of saying good bye would be to shake my hand and say “good luck” and every time I wear this watch now I can hear those words.

Thank you Tim and good luck.

Ah man, I really love this. Doesn’t matter the watch, to receive anything like this from someone you hold admiration for is special. He sounds like a great dude, glad you were able to share some time with him.

Wear it in honour of him as you know his values. Hopefuly it will remind you down the line in crucial decisions as what he would have done as you see his watch on your wrist.

Appreciate it man - exactly it’s what the watch is tied to that makes it special in this case. I shall cherish it always
