A Steinhart Marine Chronometer. Deck watches like this were used in conjunction with a ship's clock initially set to GMT and located beneath deck and a sextant to estimate longitude when out of sight of land. Made obsolete first by onboard radio and more recently by satellite aided navigation. Today it's an attractive clean design that's reminiscent of an earlier age.
