Grey market vs pre owned

I am considering a new dive watch and wondered if anyone had thoughts on buying a pre owned watch with papers vs a grey market watch without papers. I was thinking pre owned would be better just to have the papers but how much weight do papers have if its a watch I do not plan on selling. Also, I like the idea of being the first to scratch the watch. Thoughts?

That range I would be ok with going grey. I never had any problems with he grey market. But have got some used watches in that range that have been great. I feel that used is always a chance. You don't know how the watch has been treated.

Go grey I’ve gone grey for watches over 10k and under $500. Honestly a warranty is only as good as the paper it’s written on unless there needs to be a whole movement swap. Pretty much everything external to the real world is not covered.
