70's Seiko 5 rebuild required

I want to rebuild the movement on my dads 70's Seiko 5 UFO. The watch runs, but has probably never been serviced. I will be freshening up the case and crystal myself. Can anyone recommend a place to send the movement for full service. I did get a quote from Seiko America for like $550, and one other watch maker that replied for roughly the same. Would I be able to find a better deal than this? Are there any Seiko specific watch makers I can use.

Are you willing to do a movement swap out on the watch? If possible, chances are you’ll be able to find a replacement movement for it all together and have a watchmaker just do a swap. We should bring down your cost in servicing the movement unless you’re interested in the original move, it be put back in, then at that point, I will try to do some research on a local watchmaker who is privately run that has a good reputation to do the service and see if he will charge you less money

If you are in travelling to south east Asia anytime soon bring it, you’ll find lower prices. But I’ll argue it is a fair price for most countries at 400—600$

Thanks Mr.Santana. Yes I would prefer to keep the original movement. Let me know if you find anything out.

sfreak. Thanks for your insight into the going rate. I have never had a watch rebuilt so I had no idea. And your idea of SEA is great. I did not think of that, and I am traveling to Thailand in less than 2 weeks.

If you are passing through Bangkok you will find someone who is specialised in Seiko watches for sure. And I would think it’ll cost between 100-200$

Thanks again. I will see what Mr.Santana finds. If that does not pan out I will look up someone in Bankok or Pattaya.
