Love for the Seiko Turtle and 4R Movement

I've been toying with the idea of getting a Turtle since Seiko rereleased them a few years back but the size has always put me off. I have a 6.5" flat wrist and I typically shy away from anything over 40mm.

Well, over the weekend I dropped by Macy's as I saw they were selling the SPB777/SPBE93 for $356. After trying it on, I was really surprised at how well it wore and how comfortable it was. I decided to snag it and it has been on my wrist ever since.

While the comfort is excellent (it may be the most comfortable sports watch I own), the real surprise has been the accuracy. It's been over 4 days now since I set the time and the watch is running two seconds behind. Not -2 sec/day but -2 sec for the past four days. That's insane. I have watches that cost like 50x more than the Turtle that can't keep time as well.

I know you take a bit of a gamble with Seiko as their "acceptable range" is pretty wide for the 4R (and most of their movements) but I've been really happy with my last two purchases. I picked up a SPB153 about a month ago with a 6R movement and that is running at a steady +5 sec/day which is within COSC spec.

I thought I'd share my experiences just in case others out there had the same hesitations that I had.

The Turtle is a great watch! Here is a mod that I did a few years ago.

turtle town. I bought mine off eBay during the first lock down / quarantine and I’m continually surprised by the watch - didn’t expect to like it so much 👏

Whoa! Does that have a gold finish or is it just the lighting?

I'm with you! I can't wait for the summer so I can get this thing in the water.

Also, it looks great on the NATO. I'll have to give that a shot.

Yes, it was the gold turtle! IIRC the ref # is srpc44.

That's awesome! I'm pretty sure you have a one of a kind Turtle. Nicely done!

Thanks! Unfortunately I sold it a while back, but it was a fun one to wear!

When I get a Seiko diver I generally swap out the strap for a Barton Elite strap, silicon rubber too and a shorter length so you don't get that odd tang at the end sticking out. The turtle I have is the LE  blue lagoon. Fits like a charm on my 170mm wrist.

Yeah, the length of the stock Seiko strap is kinda crazy, but I get it being a dive watch and all. I'm a big fan of the Uncle Seiko rubber straps as you can get them in shorter sizes. I picked one up for my SPB153 and I really like it.

Those Barton Elite straps look great, especially the bicolored ones. For $22, I may just have to get a few to try out. Thanks for the tip!

You're welcome my friend, I tried a couple of uncle Seiko for my Samurai's too, love the fat spring bars they supply 👍
