I never realised until just now, while watching a YouTube prog. about watch jewels, that the sapphire lens on the watch is the same material as that of the jewels in the mechanism. But without the red dye.
I have at least one Waltham that has clear pallet jewels. I wonder why they are dyed red, is it just a hangover from when the jewels were real rubies?

Yes. Originally natural rubies were used. Now synthetic is cheaper & easier. Most companies colour their jewel bearings red, but some do other colours too. 👍🏻
