First Attempt at Making Leather Straps

Well, Fall is here and it's time to get to work in my studio & shop. I've wanted to start making leather straps and I got bored last night. So I knocked a couple out to get my feet wet. My son already snagged the tan one, He would have taken both but I like to keep the first of anything I make so I can look back and see progression. Just thought I'd share, I'll be making many more.

The skiving and edge finishing shows that this isn't your first foray into leatherwork. The holes for the buckle prong seem small, but I guess they start snug? Have you considered the quick-release buckles? The only difference is adding that small slot for the sliding knob to protrude on the back of each piece.

I have a small leather business ( side hustle ) making tool related items. Chisel rolls, Aprons, etc.. but lately the lions share of leatherwork has been Saw Sheath's for for Florip Saws.

Items for watches was inevitable, I started doing watch boxes for friends. Recently did a watch roll for Ivan at Vario in exchange for a Popeye watch.

oh sorry, yeah I don't have an oblong punch small enough to do a proper buckle prong slot. so I improvised. Ordered one today!

I didn't have any spare quick release bars to use. so I just went with what was in my parts box. But yes once you go quick release, It's hard to go back!

Great stuff.

I would recommend getting leather from used goods because there is a huge amount of it available for basically free or close enough. From thrift stores or Facebook groups etc.

And also to avoid increasing demand for new leather to be produced because it's a really horrible industry. China is the world's biggest producer of leather and much of it is mislabeled cats and dogs. And many other issues which you can see online if you're interested.

Cheers. 🍻
