Two accessibly priced versions of new GS movements

Image

Now, by accessible, I mean not a 50k limited edition. Yes, the SLGA007 5 day Spring Drive is a limited edition, but it’s the first more accessible version of this new movement.  I look forward to a standard edition watch with this new movement, much like the SLGH005 “White Birch” is for the new hi-beat movement.

Both dials have a silvery metallic undertone. The SLGH005 is silvery more than white, so maybe it should be the Silver Birch?

The dial on the SLGA007 is just gorgeous if you’re a blue dial fan. I am. It’s dark blue under most lighting conditions but is a metallic reflective blue, like waves reflecting the sun, in sunlight or direct light. In lower lighting situations, it’s almost flat looking l and the pattern on the dial isn’t apparent.

Took this shot at my AD with my SLGA007 and a SLGH005 they had in stock.

What do you think of these? Yes, the price is higher than their previous models, but there are some impressive upgrades in these new movements, in my opinion.

Saw the SLGH005 in person at the GS Boutique, and can quite honestly say that I've never seen a more impressive dial.  Asked to see the SLGA007, but they didn't have it available.  I know they're expensive, especially relative to other GS models, but honestly can't think of any other watches by any other manufacturer with the same level of technology, fit and finish, beauty, specs, etc., at a comparable price point.

If I were a "dressy-watch" guy, hands down, no question whatsoever, both of these would be in my collection.

So, would love your thoughts:  I thought that the SBGE257 would be my next watch purchase.  However, GS keep upping their movement game!  Should I go ahead and get it now, enjoy it now, even though it's 14.7mm thick?  Or wait till GS incorporate the new spring drive tech into their sports line?  I mean, what if they release a comparable spring drive GMT sports watch with 5 day power reserve and they're able to get it down to sub-13mm?

With GS, it's kind of like buying a laptop in the late 90's.  You get the latest model, and its tech is obsolete within 3 months!

Whaddaya think?

I personally wouldn’t wait. I’ve tried that watch on and was worried about the thickness in specs, but in practice on the wrist, it wears well. Seeing as they just released that within the past year or two, I’m not sure it’ll get the new movement any time soon, and even if/when it does, it’ll be more expensive.

So, I say go for it! Enjoy it!

This is what I love about any enthusiast forum.

Q:  Should I be responsible and save up money?  So that, you know, my kids can eat and go to school with clean clothes?  Or go ahead and get that 2nd mortgage to fuel my addiction?

A:  Well, you only live once!  Go for it!

Thank you, sir!  You have provided me with all the necessary kick in the pants to make the  right decision.  No joke, I just reached out to my dealer and asked him to source me the SBGE257.  😀

You can eat ramen for a few months. The kids can too. 😜

I think you’ll love it. Honestly, the newer movements will almost double the price, so enjoy this one. I was surprised by the way it wore (so well!), and the bracelet has microadjust, unlike most GS bracelets.

This review I just found searching says more than I can about it. I really do like this line and think they’re great watches for everyday use.

You, sir, are a scholar and a gentleman!  I thought I'd scoured every watch review site on the Internet.  That one is new to me, and it's fantastic!

You're absolutely right:  A newer, slimmer, 5-day power reserve spring drive is going to double the price of the watch.  And it is amazing how some simple design choices can make such a big difference in terms of how a watch wears.  I have the SBGJ237, and it wears nothing like its specs would suggest.  44mm diameter, 14.4mm thickness, and yet it feels tiny in comparison to the 42mm diameter, 13.6mm thickness Breitling Premier B01 I once had.

Can't wait!  Gonna have it in late January.  Will, obviously, post pics once I get it!

Thank you, man!
