Oris Hölstein 2021 Edition is the Big Crown Pointer Date I was waiting for

When Oris announced the Hölstein 2021, I knew I had to get it. While the standard  a big Crown Pointer Date has been in the catalog for decades, with some amazing new dial colors and even in bronze, this one appeals to me more.

  • Plain bezel - I appreciate the plain bezel on this. It looks so much cleaner to me.  Love Oris’ bezel on the Big Crown ProPilot, which has that turbine look, but I don’t like the one on the Pointer Date as much.
  • Seconds subdial - This was probably the biggest change that I liked. I could never put my finger on why the standard Pointer Date dial looked too busy/crowded, but it was the four hands. By moving the seconds to a subdial, the only other hand is the pointer date.
  • Even more vintage aesthetics - The smaller size, combined with the older style dial font and layout, with the gray/white/red color scheme are so appealing.

What do you think? Prefer the regular line? Appreciate this one more? Both are worthy?

It is a clean watch. I've never been a small seconds guy, so I'd probably opt for something even cleaner.

If they made this as a two hander plus the pointer date, that would’ve been perfect. As is, this was the best pointer date for me. But great point about being cleaner. Do you like the standard pointer date?

I do. The little splash of color helps to minimize confusion with the two hands. I’m sure this piece looks better in person!

I love the plain bezel, small seconds, the pencil hands, and the movement upgrade. I miss the crescent pointer and the stylized Arabics (even though they’d be way out of place on this design). Mostly I love that Oris is trying something new and not afraid to mess with tradition.

I do like those elements of the current line as well, but as you said, would look out of place on this design. The Pointer Date range offers many great options for almost all size and color desires, plus some bronze mixed in there too for different case materials.

Ultimately, this was still the one for me, though I really like many of the regular choices. The center seconds hand on the standard may have been okay in practice but I am quite pleased with this one. New movement is a joy too. Love that Oris offers great options at many price points!

This is the modern iteration this line really needed.  Particularly the hands and the bezel look so fresh. Obviously the caliber 400...I love it

The small seconds is a huge design win. The center seconds on the OG competed with the pointer hand to the detriment of legibility. There’s just a lot of balance in this new design.

What do you think of the dark blue colorway Oris just announced? What other colors would you like to see?

Love the blue. It may be nicer because higher contrast between the pad printed numerals and the dial. Plus the display caseback. Hoping they do more dial colors and maybe even bronze, for those who want that.

yeah I do, and I'm an Oris fan boy, but does this watch "look" it's price? I don't think so.

They’re charging more for the tech in the new watches. I’m glad they’re still also releasing watches without the in-house movements, which keeps the prices reasonable. (similar to the approach Grand Seiko is taking with their new movements and old)

Owning this Hölstein 2021 Edition, I can tell you this feels solidly built and above the quality of their current models from a movement perspective. The exterior feels as solid as always.

Small seconds work well with this kind of dial. Something in me looks for cathedral hands though.

I prefer the hands on this to the regular production big crown pointer date.
