Are Cartiers primarily rather… to you?

I’ve heard so many people talk about Cartier "watches" as jewelry rather than actual watches. One person said "I don’t wear Cartiers, the only jewelry I wear is my wedding ring“. What’s your take on this?

Cartier watches have clear, distinct designs and historical heritage.  I think it’s unfair to write these watches off just because the company also makes jewelry.  I don’t happen to own one.  But Cartier watches are a solid acquisition to any collection.

Aren’t all luxury watches jewelry that tells time?  Bottom line is that if you like good watches, Cartier hits the mark, and if you like good jewelry, well they win again.

I always love conversations with people who insist that certain luxury watches are jewelry while others are not.

That sort of cognitive dissonance would be helpful in my day to day

Not to be blunt, but those people are wrong. Cartier makes legit watches steeped in history and iconic design.

Harry Winston makes some of the world’s greatest jewelry. They also make some great high end watches.

Cartier isn't my personal taste, but I will defend them against this charge.

To me all watches are jewellery. To tell I can use my phone. I wear watches because I like them.

Why do buy luxury watches?  I to tell the time right?  I personally look at my luxury on my wrist about 10 times a day, and I can honestly say only about twice is it to tell the time.  We purchase/collect these time pieces because they are art. Cartier have been producing these art time pieces for years.  Their watches are iconic, timeless and highly finished.  I know it not for everyone but they are definitely watches and also jewellery, but then again aren't all watches jewellery.  Just buy what you like and not be influenced by what someone says.  You will then enjoy this hobby more and be able to purchase a watch you really like and suits your taste.  Ask the legendary watch collector John Goldberger if Cartier are watches and you see what the answer is.

Highly subjective opinion. Even Goldberger's opinion doesn't have higher value than yours or mine.

I personally do buy watches as time telling devices rather than jewelry. I do in fact use them to tell the time almost always. It's more cumbersome to cram out my phone than peeking at my wrist. Also I'm a huge chronograph fan, because I use it all the time throughout the day. For me the technology and usability is the no.1 reason to buy a certain watch. Hence I wouldn't even consider buying a Cartier watch. Highly illegible, too small, too 'fancy' in my opinion. Sure they're artistic pieces of jewelry, but I honestly do not consider them watches, rather bracelets with moving hands. For me, a watch must be legible, purposeful and have a decent history. Cartiers lack the first two criteria points.

I value your opinion and that why this hobby is so fun and beautiful.  We use watches very differently and are very different type of collector.

Absolutely! I’m glad it’s this way. Imagine everybody wanting to buy the same watch 😵
