Would you give your Speedy a mullet?

I just swapped out my new hesalite 3861 Speedmaster with a sapphire caseback and it looks STUNNING!!! I know this may split the crowd in the comments so I figured I’d make this a poll. My rationale is this Speedy is my 20-year Air Force career gift to myself and as my grail watch and lifetime milestone watch, I plan to have this forever. I was constantly torn between getting the purist version with the hesalite that gives me the vintage look or going with the sapphire to be able to see the new movement (especially the new 3861) but looking more modern. I ended up going with the official Moonwatch because I got an amazing 30% off deal from the Exchange which I couldn’t pass up. But I saw the sapphire caseback option from Spirialwinder and saw the guy from WristSwap do it and just thought what a perfect best-of-both worlds! So now I’m all business up front and party in the back!!!

It is your watch do what you like, always. If I wanted the case back, I would have (and did) buy the sapphire sandwich. Purists be damned, but most modern Speedmasters are nothing like the original, so I do not care about remaining true to the OG. If I wanted to remain true, I would have simply found an original.

Well I was holding out for the next ride to the Moon, but I didn’t get the call.

There is still time!

Wow, thanks for the point in the right direction.  I'd love to have the option plus I think that unlike my 1861, your hesalite 3861 is just as decorated as the movement in the saphire sandwich.

Out of curiosity, does the mullet add to the thickness of the watch?

One of my favorite brands and model.  I have the same model and now you peeked my interest, besides in is not permanent.

I honestly don't understand the fascination with open casebacks; in the same way I don't understand why people lift the bonnet of their cars to watch the engine running.

As an engineer, there are only two reasons to gawp at a complex mechanism in operation:

  1. To try and work out why its not working
  2. As a self-congratulory pat-on-the-back because you actually got it working

Yes, the 3861 movement is decorated the same way whether you have the sapphire sandwich or the closed caseback so I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed! The thickness of the caseback is exactly the same and it actually feels a little better on the wrist since the sapphire caseback is flat and you don’t feel the Speedmaster hippocampus logo.

Exactly! I can always put the standard caseback on! I was very careful to make sure I blew any dust off the underside of the sapphire first before putting on and made sure the new seal was tight. I followed the same procedure as the video I linked above.

Or 3. To gawp at the magnificence of the art of watchmaking. To me, the master function of the movement is one thing, but to be able to see how beautifully decorated the movement is and also to see the chronograph engage with a push of a button!

I did the same for my 1861.

I did the same for my 1861.

Any regrets? How long has it been? Any issues?

No regrets. It has been about 6 months and it works just like it did before.

Congratulations on the "milestone" piece and more importantly thank you for your service!

Enjoy every second....

You’re right! It’s not permanent! I just put the standard caseback back on and I love it even more now! I’ll probably put the sapphire back on in a few months again! Love it!!!
