I have the Reverso Classic on the ostrich strap. I've been looking for a decent black strap to repace it, but the size is awkward (17mm) and the only ones I've found so far are pretty thin (I think the Reverso needs a thicker strap to suit it).
To match shoes, like belt and gloves, is the conventional answer. Hence, black alligator and lizard are such terrible choices for anything expecting to be worn much. Out of the two, team brown. One watch ducks this with a navy blue leather band, which is so versatile even if I don't have the Buster Brown's to match.

This is, of course, correct. Black shoes limit my choices, I have many more on brown. However, some watches will only take a black strap:

Please explain to the obtuse why this would not work with brown.
Since I'm bothering to post, I'll include the tidbit that the old adage "No brown in town" refers to City of London, which is basically the financial district.

I have tried it on several shades of brown, even colorful silicon. I think that the black on the indices and hands dictates black. There should be some black leather straps in every box.
Red and I have some black straps
Zero brown currently
Brown... I have had to wear black for work for the last couple of decades, so at this time I have nothing that isn't work related that is black.

Black is my standard, however, chocolate brown is also on the menu for the right watch.

Love chocolate browns.
I’ve purchased a few watches that came on black leather or canvas but I’ve always changed it. Like many above, I prefer brown or grey for versatility.

Yes, brown seems to be the more preferred color for most.
I like the black strap. But it also depends on the dial colour for me. I would get a green strap if the dial colour is green.
I think it depends on your outfit, but brown gets my vote.
