It's official, Seiko has been Gentafied

Just saw this announcement for Seiko's new Astron and 3X62 movement:

https://www.seikowatches.com/us-en/products/astron/2023_sport_design

Cool part is that this movement loses one second every 100,000 years, so we're covered until Armageddon or Mars colonization, whichever comes first. Also it's made from Titanium. But the integrated bracelet and waffle dial...Genta has finally made his way into the Japanese giant.

Have they done something similar before? I'm not aware, this seems to be the closest they've come to joining the integrated bracelet watch bandwagon.

Anyways, I gotta say I don't hate it. And the overengineering on the movement is my kinda jam.

Anyone else think they'll give this thing a go?

I like it. Wonder what price range they’re shooting for.

Seiko might be a little late to the game but I like this one. I’m not a stickler for accuracy since I don’t do anything that I am timed down to the exact second. I wouldn’t pay more than $500 for this but surprise me.

·

I'm not sure if the rectangular (not square) brick pattern on the dial is spot on, but everything else is. They don't seem to be golden rectangles, merely double width.

Is Gentafied your neologism or has this brilliant term just escaped my notice till now?

Speaking of which, what am a "dimensional case?" I suspect it just means, you know, faceted.

Gentafied is my own made up term. Maybe someone coined it before?

Had not heard of this before. He really was everywhere!

Wow

For the benefit of those for whom English is a second language, I'm assuming this to be a play on the word gentrify, gentrified, gentrification, etc. It is so apt and so obvious in hindsight that one is amazed for it to have taken so long to come around.

·

There's something not quite right about the subdial.

I hadn't thought about it that deeply actually haha. But you're right, it is very fitting.

Astron models have always been the most expensive of the Seiko family (except GS).

I believe a typical Astron is anywhere between $2.5k-$4k.

I don’t know anything

The old Seiko kinetics have integrated bracelets, and some of them are really Fugly, in my opinion. And I owned one 😂

I find all Astron models have this similar "futuristic" look and it is not my style. Of all the Astron models, the only one I considered was the SSH107J1 (about 2800 euros MRSP), but still, I was not convinced, the dial color is too plain for my liking. So I decided I would wait and see if Seiko came out with something different in the future, maybe not even a GMT, and... they came out with this!, So still I don't like it: too squared/sharp-edged for me.

I think Citizen's GPS technology and movements are overall better: faster GPS, more power reserve, only all their GPS models are very similar: 3-4 subdials, alarm, chronograph, GMT, 24H, and very busy dials which I don't like.

So instead, I bought a simple, clean dial, radio-controlled, titanium, solar Citizen for 450 euros which absolutely love (CB0260-81L)

For reference I see some Astrons on C24 for under $2k CAD (sub $1.5k USD):

This one has the 3X22 movement. Maybe the new one could be priced around $2k USD?

I just noticed they also have ones that look like a chrono/GMT:

The Astron GPS Solar New Design | Astron | Brands | Seiko Watch Corporation (seikowatches.com)

Those are about $1k more expensive.

Definitely not the models Seiko is known for. Maybe they're popular in Asia or Europe? I haven't heard much of these in North America.

Too complicated dials in my opinion. I have this Arctura (it is 18 years old now) and I still love it.

You may like the radio controlled variant.

I mean this is OK, but the dial is too boring and the bezel looks like it's plastic...

I have a similar problem with ceramic bezels looking like plastic most of the time. Not a fan of ceramic bezels even though resistant to scratches. Personally prefer aluminium or steel, just looks better.

If you like DLC coated watches then there is an all-black variant with textured dial SSJ009.

That is the killer... But maybe a bit big?

A bit too big for me 😊

This is amazing wristwatch. The new cheapest AP.

What's the model number for this one? Searching the image with Google gives me the Zenith Defy Skyline, lol

That size (and price) is right up my alley, thanks!

I've got my eye on this watch which, for a mere $400 more, comes with a polished black ceramic bezel. A great looking watch but, at $1,400, is a bit too rich for my blood. Nonetheless still on my wishlist.

Did you mention it as just a reference to the design or was it literally involving G.Genta in coming up with this model? 😊

I meant as in it's another watch similar to the Royal Oak design, one of Genta's most popular.

·

I like it, it's astron priced at £1800, but it's got the fancy bells & whistles.

As usual you will need a rocket scientist to operate the movement 😂🚀

·

Seiko CS Sports Chronograph, they have a faux-integrated style bracelet on it.

yes, but the waffle dial is what brings us full circle with Genta and the new Astron I think.

yes, true.

But CS Chrono has a very cool texture also.) I might say it's more interesting texture wise than an Astron)
