I remember the first time my wife was introduced to my love for watches. We were only dating then but on this occasion, our matinee movie included a stroll through Roosevelt Field Mall in New York. It just so happens, (with no strategic planning on my part. I promise) that on our way to the … Continued The post Defending your obsession: 3 common questions I get from non-watch lovers appeared first on Time and Tide Watches. Although I'm not sure I become a consigliere by answering "When are you going to buy a Rolex," author Ricardo Sime's 3 most-asked questions are probably the same ones non-watch lovers ask me:
What are your most common questions from non-watch lovers? How do you answer them?

Q: Hey, what's that watch?
A: (Looking down at my GS) Oh, this? It's a Seiko.
[End of conversation.]
#2
Q: Are you looking at more watches?
A: Yes
[Typically wife or daughters asking.]
#3
Q: Hey, do you have any more Rolexes?
A: No, why?
Q: Your cousin wants one now
A: Okay, I'll order one
[Aunt asking me this morning for some fake Rolexes.]
Why do you own so many watches and yet you look at the wall clock or your cell phone to find out what time it is.

A variation of "Hey, what's that watch?" I sometimes get is "Is that a Rolex?" to which I happily become an advocate for whatever brand it is...

I get that from our adult children, but they are slowly drinking the watch Kool-Aid as they get older and wiser, not to mention when they get questions from people asking about the unique watches I gifted them. 😂
my wife: Is that new a watch?
me: nope been in the box for while…🤷♂️
my kids: are you watching watches AGAIn!!??
me: Yeeeeeeeesssss!! Get out of my room!!
my older brother: do you need another Seiko!??
me: yeeeeeez!! 😠
Why not just wear an Apple watch it does more than just tell time.
Why not just wear an Apple watch it does more than just tell time.
Or, why wear a watch at all since your phone does more than just tell time. 😮
Why don't you just get a fake?
Why does Rolex cost so much?
Dude isn't Cartier like jewellery for women?
Ooooohhhh i love this topic.
2. Is Rolex actually the best watch?
I actually have fun with this one. The listener might not but I do.
3. Why have more than one watch? You only have one wrist (that you can wear a watch on) after all.
When confronted with this question, I quickly exit the conversation before I realize the path of madness that watch collecting has brought me down.

Not a bad idea in Brooklyn, where a church bishop was robbed mid-sermon:
Do you twitch your head when you reply, "Maybe..." 😂

I am loving the responses, for sure! I haven't heard the 3rd one in a while - maybe people are afraid to ask me that one 😜
What time is it?
What time is it?
When you reply, do you include the watch's rated accuracy? 😉
"Are you single?" 😉

I can definitely relate to the wife thing! I had, stupidly, told my wife that if I can get a Speedmaster Professional...I would not get any other watches. Rookie mistake...but at least I did get my grail watch.
I think this is clearly a generational thing. I didn't become super cognizant of watches until maybe 2010 or so, clearly past Tag's prime(?), and my knowledge of 90s and early 00s watches is pretty blank.
Mostly the same questions as everyone else except...
1.) Q: Are you rich? A: No, I wish.
2.) Q: Why are you wasting your money on something that tells time? A: Opinions vary.
3.) Q: Why don't you buy a Mickey Mouse watch for $5 bucks it does the same thing A: (Eyeroll), Why do people buy Art, collect cars, homes, or anything else? (crickets).
4.) Q: I could NEVER spend that much on a watch! A: Life is about choices and tradeoffs.
In most cases, I simply ignore people's dumb questions and sometimes with an expression like this....

The most common question I get from non watch lovers is "Why are you talking to me about this?" 😂
Looks at my Rohwleks. Looks at my shoes. Looks at me, asks what do you do for a living? I always answer I dont work. 🤣🤣🤣

I think folks ask about Tag (I've noticed that it's always "Tag", never "TAG Heuer"), because they're so aggressively marketed to the mainstream population. It's the only high-end watch brand that's in their face as much as Rolex.
My dad knows I have a Tudor BB58, but there is a good reason he doesn't know of my Rolex yet 🤣

Checkout person at Trader Joe looking at my Oris Clean Ocean: "that looks SO good" Everyone else on earth ( other than watch "folk" ) : nothing. No questions, no anything....
Opinions vary. 👍
Came from one of my favorite movies....RoadHouse
The 2 questions I get the most are:
Why do need so many watches?
How could you spend so much on a watch?
