[Decision] - Classic Junghans Max Bill or a Modern Entry-Level Nomos Club?

I am entertaining the idea of acquiring a Bauhaus Design Watch and these two got the top of my list.

The Junghans have all the "Real-Deal" story behind the Bauhaus school but the Nomos is the new-cool-kid that everyone talks about it.

Nomos is famous for its fantastic finishing, but to be honest, I couldn't see much of that "amazing quality" on this entry-level when I saw it in person.

This photo is not mine (Thanks Case Back Watches!) but it highlights the difference.

I also have these against Nomos:

  • More expensive;
  • 10 months on the waiting list!!!!

I am more inclined to choose the Junghans but I would like to know your opinion first. Which one do you prefer and why?

I would get the Junghans. I've considered it many times, myself. To me, it's the quintessential Bauhaus watch, and doesn't really seem overpriced for what you get.

·

Imho the design of the Nomos Club is too playful to be considered Bauhaus. It looks like something that grandparents think that their grandchildren would like to have as a gift for graduating high school. That´s OK, that´s what it is designed for.

The Junghans´ über-simple layout is designed to look classy in any situation.

Agreed, two different design aesthetics. The Orion is the better comparison, perhaps the Tangente as well. OP, these are two different classes of watch. Both brands are awesome, but the build quality and movement of the Nomos are significant steps up. I love my Chronoscope, but it feels cheap, whereas the my Club feels like a small tank. If you simply want the look for not a lot of money, get the Jungans and enjoy.

I really want a Nomos Club!

I dont know if I’m brave enough but i do love the pink.

I like the Junghans. Such elegant minimalism and Hallmark German design.

·

I have a Junghans Form C and I love it. I decided with junghans Since it’s my first German brand and love the simplicity of it. The dial is kinda mesmerizing when you stare at it. For me, Junghans is great starter , I plan to either go with the automatic chrono next or the nomos club but either or you cannot go wrong, I say get both!! 😂

I love the Nomos Club and would absolutely be wearing one if I could afford it (but not on my teacher’s wage.) However, my £100 Quiksilver quartz at least gives me some of the look.

Hey @onlyoneMatt, thanks for your suggestion!

If you are looking for Bauhaus on a budget I would like to suggest you look into a brand called Sternglas.

They have great pieces at a more appealing price, with automatic (around USD 500) and quartz movements (around USD 275).

Here is a video from the man itself, @Max, about this watch:

I hope you like it!

I prefer the Nomos club

·

You might want to look at the Iron Annie Bauhaus watch. Previously named Junkers, this watch has direct links to the Bauhaus movement, via Mr Junkers. It is also a beautiful watch.

Thanks for the idea and the link @thiago  (and the great video @Max!) Going to have to give Sternglas a deeper look.

Nomos would be my pick. From a design perspective both are great however Nomos is all in house movements and a better watch overall IMO.

·

You can also get the Bauhaus look from Dufa, e.g.

They are not a cool brand like Nomos (no in-house movements), and although their name has been around for a while, they may be one of those recently revived brands.

·

I'm not huge bauhaus watch design fan. So although I like the price of the Junghans I like the splash of orange on the Nomos so I would likely go with the Nomos.

·

Budget choice with good movement.

·

I can't get on board with Junghans, so I'd go Nomos myself.

·

It's the watch calling to you. Watch choices are all subjective. Need to see both in the flesh. Both have a good reputation, I would see how you feel after seeing both. Funny how I can give advice but not follow it myself. Curse of been a watch nerd

·

Junghans is a lot dressier!. If you combined a Nomos watch with a Junghans case (smaller lugs) that would be the best combo for me at least.

·

Junghans Max Bill.

The Nomos' sub dial and the mixed Arabic and Roman numerals messes with my head...

·

Neither is my cup of tea, but at least the Nomos doesn't look like it belongs on a blood pressure cuff.

·

I would note that color is not a violation of Bauhaus design so long as it serves a function such as adding legibility, and preferably does not hide the underlying material. Same goes for dials.

Similarly, a mix of Arabic and Roman numerals is fine since artful typography is essentially Bauhaus. But again, only if it doesn't affect legibility.

A quick test for Bauhaus: Do all design elements serve a function with no needless ornamentation? If yes, it might be Bauhaus.

nomos 👍

·

Can’t go wrong with either of them honestly.

·

I saw someone mention Sternglas and I own one of the Naos models and im not impressed with the quality while the design is amazing.

Anyways in your situation I wouldn't get either. I would save up to get the nomos tangente or the ahoi. The higher priced models by nomos feel and look better.

Indeed my first mechanical watch is a Sternglas Asthet in white. It has a Miyota 9015 movement and is only 8.5 mm thick. But I later sold it and bought a pre-owned Max Bill Chronoscope with a superb discount 🥰

·

i like the Nomos more. I think the design is more interesting and speaks to my bias toward sportier watches. The Junghans is all dial, and I tend to have a love hate relationship with all dial watches. They tend to be very photogenic but they never look right on me for some reason.

·

I would chose the MaxBill. First of all because it is the real bauhaus deal and I just prefer the design. Of course the Nomos has an in-house movement but that isn't so important for me personally in this price range.

I don't know what it is about the Nomos. I love it on photos but especially the white dial version looks a little bit off in person for me. It just doesn't tick the box for me.

The MaxBill on the other hand got this incredible crystal and just feels great on the wrist for me. Okay, there is "only" an ETA movement in there but I've got great experience with the ETA movements in Junghans watches. So I think the movement shouldn't be an argument against the Junghans.

If you got the feeling, that the Nomos isn't the real deal for you and you just think about it because of the in-house movement and the things that are written in the internet, I would say don't buy it. Mechanical watches is not a rational hobby, it's also about how you feel about a watch. So forget about the movement and the water resistance and just choose the watch you personally feel better with.

·

I had exactly the same question for myself! I liked better the Junghans, but ended up buying the Nomos Club Campus (still waiting for it to arrive), just due to the fact I couldn’t stand the “Made in30Germany” part in the dial :-). I hope Junghans realizes that one day a fix it 😉

I'm thinking about the orange one, I love it and its colourfulness and I want it!

So, pull the trigger and share!!! 💪🏾

Nomos lug to to lug is quite big, have you tried it on wrist? The max bill 1960s design is timeless
