Seiko 5 X Honda Super Cub
Oh boy!
Today, #seiko announced the new #seiko5 collaboration with #honda, the Seiko 5 Sports Super Cub, and it is... Well... super!
Aesthetically, it has a lot going for it. For a start, I loves me a #green watch 💚! Like everyone else, I started off very skeptical of the "new" Seiko5 Sports models, sitting somewhere between an #skx and a faux-diver, and have only grown to dislike them more since they all look the same. Blue, black, green, champagne... All just the same. The great thing about the Seiko 5 line was the shear number of different styles and cases over the years. Sure, it's a good idea to reign that in from a business perspective but golly it's boring.
This piece on the other hand looks nothing like it's siblings and 'tus a joy to behold.
(Stay with me, the fanboy nonsense will come to an end eventually).
Perhaps my enthusiasm stems from riding a Honda Super Cub 50cc in the same #colors as a younger man while at university:
Not this particular one, but very much the same.
But Seiko has really captured the Super Cub here in a way you would think was kinda crap if you heard about each of the following individually.
The rear indicators from the Super Cub at 11 and 1 o'clock positions and gas cap at 12 are adorable!
And we know the colorway works because Honda has been selling these for almost 65 years! (The one pictured above will set you back ¥140000 by the way...).
When was the last time we had a #signed #crown on an entry-level Seiko!? And it's a fuel gauge! 😂😂😂
The Super Cub logo looks to be applied which is a nice touch, and I can't get enough of the #bezel not because it's green (although that's great) but because it's different from all the other Seiko 5s!
I haven't had a Seiko #natostrap before (they should come as a standard inclusion of you ask me) but it looks good. Though I'd be tempted to replace it with a leather strap, a weathered rally-style for sure!
But it's not all carefree rememberances of my youth, and at $AUD625 preorder I'm inclined to spend AUD$200 more for the AUS/NZ only SRPJ53K "Eucalyptus":
while still getting my fix of green! I can't say the Super Cup is worth $625 for me given that it's the same as any other Seiko 5 Sports which I can pick up for a little bit over AUD$200 pretty much anytime 😭

I wish this was a no date variation just to maintain the strong symmetry of the dial design. I dig it though - have held off on a Seiko5 but maybe this is the one to pull me in.

Wow! That is some gorgeous watch!
Not being that familiar with the scooter, the watch initially looked really low effort, less the obvious and consumable strap. Once the details were pointed out, it became obvious that this was slickly done. It has many references that are subtle and not brazen and overt.
Ooh, I really like it. It's got the retro racing aesthetic that you see much more often on chronographs, whilst not being one. As someone who loves that look but doesn't really like chronographs I very much appreciate it!

Not sure they copied it, but it does evoke a speedometer like feeling:
I'm totally unfamiliar with the bike, and thus have no passion for the concept... BUT... I absolutely love that Seiko has done this, and I look forward to the day when they homage something that has been meaningful to me over the years. I will eat it up.
This is an inspired piece of horology, while the watch is beautiful as a stand alone item, to be paired up with the most popular and ubiquitous motorcycle ever produced by one of the best manufacturers is simply fantastic.
I need this, also I need the Supercub to go with it. Though I understand that there is a Hugh wait list for the bike currently. Also don't think that Honda bring this colour to the UK at present.
