Oyster Perpetual vs Datejust

How do people feel about the more simple / clean OP vs the Datejust which I suppose is more typical of the Rolex brand with the date bubble. I personally LOVE the symmetry and simplicity of the OP rather than the more classic Rolex look of the DJ, irrespective of price differences.

OP 100%.  The cyclops is a no for me.

·

I am not really a fan of the jubilee bracelet on all steel tbh.
But I would still take the datejust. I am a sucker for the date function.

Also the wave dial looks spectacular.

Is this question just for the hell of it or do you plan on buying one?

100% DJ.

Thanks, I believe they call it a fluted dial and it does look spectacular as it has some texture and less boring. It's not available on the OP so only the DJ has that. For context I have a TINY wrist so the Jubilee hugs my wrist much better than the bigger links of the Oyster.

As you know these are hard to come by and yesterday I saw an AD had the DJ pictured above so yes, I am considering whether to buy or not.

I’d normally prefer the OP, but I don’t care for the double batons.  (Why did they discontinue the 39?).  I think the DJs look nice, but the fluted bezel is white gold, and I worry about it getting scratched.  Still, I don’t think you could go wrong with either one.

Recently the dealers here have started keeping display models in the cases.  I experienced a momentary increase in my pulse until I saw the tiny “display only” signs.

Good luck in your hunting: post pictures!

Ah yes. It’s fluted like their bezel on some models. Don’t know why I thought of wave dial.

I mean..if you have the means going for the DJ is always a good idea I think. Especially if you have a tiny wrist. Mine is not the biggest either and I have a DJ that just fits perfectly.

Good luck with your decision.
If you buy it I expect more pictures (-:

I like both, and for different reasons each one over the other.

I like the dial in the DJ, and it’s busier in general so the strap and cyclops just work. It pops. The OP is plainer and so with the muted dial and strap it’s another look entirely, but equally acceptable. Budget and availability are really the only driver for me.

·

For me its the op , many years ago whilst working in the channel islands my work colleague bought one , if memory serves for £500 or £600 , just wish I'd had the sense to get one at that time!

·

While I do like the DJ dial, I wonder how it will look to me in 10-15 years and I'm not sure I would feel the same about it.  Additionally, the oyster bracelet looks far more substantial than the jubilee.  That leaves the OP as the pick of choice.

·

Simple OP for me -- I like the symmetry better.  Also, and a HUGE plus for me, I would wear the OP way more than the DateJust.  Dress it up or down - the OP for sure.

·

OP all day long. Clean, does the job and doesn't try anything special (which can be a negative depending on who you ask). OP and explorer are as barebones Rolex as you can get

Agreed. I love a clean dial.

·

I would take a DJ with simple dial over OP. I love date functions.

But you have already decided as you said "I personally LOVE the symmetry and simplicity of the OP". So get what you Love and do not second guess yourself.

I'd go for the DJ but get it with the oyster bracelet 🤙🏽🔥

But for that vibe it’s the E1 all day long

I need that DJ in that exact setup! Just something about that dial that speaks to me.

Are you thinking of the Explorer? The OP comes in 41mm and 36mm. I have a tiny wrist so for me 36mm is perfect, however, if you need a bigger model it comes in 41mm. The double batons at 3, 6, 9 and 12 aren't for everyone but Grand Seiko did the same with their SBGW231 and I love that watch.

The AD had the DJ to sell but didn't have any OPs so perhaps my decision has been made for me!

I'm ashamed to say I did not know ANYTHING about that dial until after discussing with a friend and doing a bit more research and now I LOVE IT! It's laser etched hexagonal shapes which are then finished in a sunburst finish on half and a matte finish on the other half. And the cost is no extra vs the plain dials. Very distinctive. Now I need to go back and hope and pray nobody bought it already. And yes, jubilee suits my small wrist and I generally prefer smooth bezel to fluted, although take a look at the fluted dial with fluted bezel - it actually does highlight the dial shapes more.

Pictures for sure if I get it (if it hasn't been sold already)

Thanks I think you really summed it up perfectly - they are BOTH great watches.

In normal circumstances that would be the thing to do but there was no OP only DJ for sale.

I like the idea of some of the DJ models with fluted bezels and jubilee bracelets with their immensely classic looks. However, in reality they often turn out a bit too shiny for me.

The 36mm OPs are great in that regard, and I’m on the infamous waiting list for one. (That being said, if I suddenly found a spare $9k and had To spend it on a Rolex, I’d probably get on the list for a DJ36 with the green palm dial, smooth bezel and oyster bracelet. That’s a hilariously cool watch)

The palm dials are really nice in a completely different way. Good luck with your OP waiting list.

DJ with jubilee and fluted bezel for me. It just projects Rolex way more than an OP. The OP is a pretty boring watch for me but you can get some great variation in the DJ line, from classic to outlandish. I also find the date complication very practical.

I do agree that the DJ is the quintessential Rolex. This is undeniable.

·

Personal preference, but I’m 100% OP over the datejust.

·

The date function is a “must” for me, so the DJ with the smooth bezel (the fluted is too “blingy” and not worth the upcharge) and the Jubilee bracelet, which is much better looking and follows the curve of your arm better.

·

I prefer the DateJust, but nothing wrong with either one. I do think the dial options on the DJ are more to my liking than a lot of the more vibrant and colorful choices on the OP.

·

DJ all the way. It has so much more charcter in the dial alone. And that jubilee bracelet?! Chefs kiss!

·

I hate the cyclops. It makes their watches look horrible to me. I wouldn’t wear a Datejust if I was give one. I know very hyperbolic but I really am not a fan of the magnification.

·

The OP is just so perfect in its simplicity. For me, it's the OP. But, I would definitely wear a DJ as well.

·

OP for me.

I am waiting for that exact blue OP
