Serica, springbars and the beginning of an obsession

My life was easier before I got my Serica. It was easier because before that watch, I had never thought about springbars. I used whatever bars the watches came with and when I needed a new one I grabbed one from the giant bag with assorted springbars I had bought for a few bucks. This was uncomplicated.

Sometimes I read online that there are people who change the stock springbars for 'quality ones' right away, I found that strange.

But then, when I first removed the bracelet from my Serica, I found these oddly beefy, shoulderless bars..

I found these weird and thought about using normal bars from the big bag instead. But when I put the bars into the watch head, this looked sooo right. Thick bars, uninterrupted between the lugs, perfect! 🤩 Normal bars just didn't cut it anymore for me.

I fell down a rabbit hole. I started researching springbars. Diameters. Manufacturers. I ordered so many bars in search of the perfect version for all my other watches, now that I had seen the light in my new Serica.

I sometimes caught myself late in the night checking out technical drawings of springbars. This had to stop.

I negotiated a compromise. Well made 1.8mm bars are good enough for me. For watches with drilled lugs I try to use shoulderless ones for that nice seamless look. I wont obsess anymore about springbars. Do you?

The diameter has to fit whatever band or bracelet is being used. Beefier ones can look better with a strap. Beyond that, I can't say I care much, except for buying quick-release in every size.

This is the best, honestly. This are the kind of things that brings the nerd in watchnerd. Just keep researching the hell out of springbars if that’s what makes you a happy man ✌🏽

Well you're telling that to the guy who tried 1.65mm and 1.7mm bars for that perfect fit in that one bracelet 🙄

Oh thanks, that looks like an interesting read!

Jumbo springbars and curved spring bars were a bit of a revelation for me tbh. Curved for a tighter sleeker profile, Jumbo when you want a pass through strap to ride as high as a bracelet. Jumbo can also feel pretty damn secure.

What bracelet did you get that’s compatible with the Serica?

It's a generic oyster-style bracelet I had lying around from when I wanted to try out the whole toolless microadjust craze.

It's a well enough fit, not perfect though.
