If I could only have one watch - which one would you chose? Two sub 40mm watches with black dials, both well liked by the watch community Sinn 556 I 38.5mm of Kontrast, legibility, straight lines or Timex Marlin reissue 34mm of they do still make them like they used to - only now in China Choose wisely!

Sinn. I want that tegimented steel and all the technological goodies you can cram in a watch at a lower (I think) price point than an Omega.

No contest. Sinn looks like something I'd be issued in a bleak dystopian society. Okay, the bracelet looks nice but that stark dial and brutalist indices are eyesores. Besides, 34mm might be a perfect size, hand winders are thinner, and domed crystal.

Admittedly, this photo might as well be an ad for Sinn legibility as the poor Marlin fades into the shadows, but I live in the light.

The Sinn is perfect for telling the time while I'm in my cosy appartment then: 😉

Telling the time isn't the Marlins strength. This silver on black one is better than the all silver though - unless the light is perfect, you only know that it's approximately today

If it's only 1 watch, then the Sinn has a stronger use case across various situations. 😉

If I had only one, the Sinn for sure.

The Sinn I could put on and forget about until I wanted to know the time.

To add to my current collection, the Marlin, I already have the better version of the 556I, the DS30.

No tegimenting on the 556i, unfortunately.  That's only available with some other models.  But I completely agree with your choice. It's a stunner of a watch and hard to overstate how amazingly DEEP black the dial is. Makes most other black watches look grey in comparison.

Wow this is a clear one - poor lil Marlin 🤷‍♂️

Without any research - I'd guess that only bead blasted cases have the tegiment option, the 556 with it's brushed case is too pretty for that.

Better don't quote me on that, but so far all the tegimented cases I've handled were blasted.

I have a 856i that is tegimented, and while I wouldn't go so far as to compare it to a truly polished case, it is definitely more brushed than bead blasted.  Since Sinn doesn't talk much about their process, I'm not 100% sure which surface finishing processes can receive the treatment.

As further information, the bracelet and clasp are also treated, and they have facets that I would say are nearly polished. So I'm guessing that it's just a design choice they're making, not that it can only be done for certain surface finishes.  That being said, unless they release more information (not likely), then I think guessing is the best we can do.

Ah good to know, I've only experienced the bead blasted ones yet.

This one is easy for me. Sinn will go far as well unless it meets Omega or Serica and there I will think a lot.

That's 3/4 of the semi final contenders I anticipate 😉

It's tough. There are also Traska, Certina, Lorier and couple of Casios that I like. I will take time thinking on most of the face offs.
