Nomos Club arrived. My first highly expensive watch.

Background

Recently I have decided that I wanted to get a higher end watch than anything in my existing collection.

I was originally looking at the Longines Conquest, which I sort of consider a grail watch, but the 34mm version is only quartz and seems to have the issue of the hands missing markers based on videos and other resources that I have seen on the watch. The 39mm one is too big. There is also an older version with an automatic movement at 34mm, but it lacks the crown guards, which just makes it lose its appeal to me.

As such, I looked for other options and the Oris Aquis stood out to me, but it felt sort of generic since I have a dive watch already. Upon my research on that, I came across this Nomos, which really spoke to me and I knew I wanted it.

As such, I set out to get one but thanks to the 10 month delivery time from Nomos and a lack of dealer stock, I was limited in my options. Ended up buying it from Jura Watches in the UK, which does mean import taxes, but the cost of the watch itself was relatively low, so the overall price wasn't too bad. I ended up paying 1200€ or so, which is definitely higher than what I could have bought it for from Chrono24 or something, but for that extra money, I got it from an AD with warranty, got an okay watch carrying case with it and got it to me 3 days after ordering instead of multiple weeks.

The watch

The watch arrived today, so I finally have it. In person, it looks great. As is visible in the photo, the dial isn't plain white as many product images and such make it seem. It's more of a grey-ish white.

The quality of everything is great. There are no issues that I can see, the alignment of everything is on point and the watch feels nice as a whole.

The large lugs were a consideration, but it wears quite well. The curve on the lugs matches my arm pretty much perfectly and the small dial makes the profile small enough.

I also like the simplicity as this watch is highly legible. One of the reasons why I chose this over the Club Campus models is the fact that there are no roman numerals and the clear separation of background from the indices. The white club campus lacks contrast for my liking. On this one, the close-to-red orange accents combined with the variety of textures works out great.

As far as the movement goes, I would say currently I'm a bit disappointed. Despite the beat rate being fairly low on paper, the fact that the seconds are on a small subdial means that the sweep is very smooth. The winding action also feels pleasant and there is resistance once the power reserve gets close to full. I have never fully hand wound a movement, so I hope I didn't overwind it and cause damage, but since the watch still works, I doubt that I have.

The part that I feel disappointed about is the adjustment of time. I have seen this movement praised for that being great and the minute hand not bouncing around. Yet it was bouncing back quite a bit. Next time I'll try adjusting it before winding, so maybe that will help. Apparently the movement also looks good, but since I have the steel caseback version, that doesn't matter.

Another negative comes with the leather strap that came with the watch. It's of great quality and total length, but for some absurd reason Nomos has decided that their customers don't need many adjustment holes, so I had to add my own adjustment hole quite far into the strap where there were no holes by default. This seems to be a common issue with leather straps as it has been my experience with every leather strap I have ever received, but the adjustment has never been this bad on any other strap.

After fixing the strap (making a hole with a screwdriver), it felt good, but felt too formal for me, so I put it on this green nato from my Timex Expedition North for now. I'll definitely get some other natos for it as this one is not of great quality and the hardware does not match the case at all. The green works surprisingly well with the dial, though. This has also confirmed that a nato works well with the watch on my wrist.

Another consideration is that while the polished case is great, it will undoubtedly get scratched up in no time.

What do you think?

Gorgeous, and the green nato is really cool with this watch.

Yeah. I was expecting it to be ugly as all hell, but nope, it looks good. I'll probably buy a bunch of different natos, so I'll be able to change the feel of the watch easily. That will include a green one with polished hardware so that it matches the watch somewhat.

How do you find it on a 2-piece strap? Do the gaps due to the long lugs bother you?

It's certainly an unique look, but they didn't bother me at all. I quite like the long lugs on my wrist actually. I switched to a nato because I like natos in general and a leather strap really doesn't do it for me in this watch.

I love Nomos. Never bought one (the lugs...) but love their designs. You should review it here!

Will do once I have had it for longer.

The little red numerical minute/second indices are a great touch.

Those are for minutes. Since the seconds hand is in a small subdial, it doesn't hit those.

I love Nomos and think the Club is their strongest line. The long lugs have never bothered me and I think it’s an overblown complaint, these watches are meant to be worn a little more small on the wrist, and if you buy it in the “right” size the lugs wont overhand and although they are long compared to most watches they aren’t comically long as others suggest.

Enjoy it! I do really like them on the Nomos two piece woven textile straps.

Nice watch , I have the same  problem with my small wrist size and leather straps . It’s a watch I’ve considered also as I love the dial , its interesting!

Beautiful watch. Loving what Nomos is producing and hope to one day own one myself. Congratulations on getting such a great piece!

·

Great watch, congratulations.  That is going to look great on a ton of straps.

Very nice. The Nato is an excellent match, both in colour (it looks very grey green on my phone) and in style - a leather strap would perhaps not work so well with the modernist feel of the watch.
