Has any famous person(s) influenced your watch purchase?

We all know James Bond wore the Submariner... or Omega. Recent movie Top Gun: Maverick featured IWC watches. Hamilton watches have been featured in numerous movies.

The above is Dr. Anthony Fauci, who is a real person unlike the fictional characters mentioned above. You may remember him from the numerous briefings about COVID over the course of the pandemic, especially if you were in the US in the past 3 years. If you're studying medicine, you may also recognize his name from Harrison's.

As far as I know, he wears a Timex Ironman. Does he have other watches? I do not know. Is he interested in horology at all? I do not know. What I do know is that he inspired me to get an Ironman myself. I thought how crazy was it that a nobody like me is lusting after an expensive watch, when one of the smartest persons in the world is wearing a Timex?

Image

The watch is no longer in my rotation and "collection" but I still look at it fondly every so often, also to remind myself that although I do not need to be the best physician in the world, I should still try to be the voice of reason to people who need me.

So has anyone influenced a watch purchase of yours? What made you buy that watch?

You could do worse than inspiration from a Harrison’s author.

Other than paid advertising, I’d say seeing former President Obama in a TAG 1500 was pretty cool.

John Cameron Swayze- but I've been in the game for a bit.

It's not something that has crossed my mind as a reason to buy a watch.

I do look to see if people wear the same watch as I do, after I have bought a watch, but haven't seen any matches yet.

I'm now imagining a youtube video titled "Avoid these watches: Watches worn by serial killers"

That's a very cool watch the former president wore.

It's so far the only watch I was inspired to buy. Could also be because it was on the affordable side as opposed to say, the Submariner. 😂

Just one.  A Casio F-91W, the only Casio I have ever owned, because Chuck Feeney wore one.

If you haven't heard of him...

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck_Feeney

I've long since lost it but I'm hoping some of the business savvy (and jaw dropping generosity) rubbed off.

I am an Explorer II lover and owner . This guy rocks one in real life

And here's a couple of real life guys who were big Rolex fans. The Flying Scott is an ambassador for the brand

I own a Resco Patriot because of Chris Kyle

I own a Timex Ironman T66801 because Jocko wears one

As an ex-HK citizen, I did not know DFS was founded by this person! F91W is very, very frugal indeed...

Different type of Ironmans, but interesting to see how two very different people managed to pick them up for regular use! Is there a reason you are drawn to watches worn by (ex or current) military personnel?

I am a Veteran.  Jump and Dive qualified. Of course,  that's the distant past when dive watches were actually issued and needed tools. I was never issued a Rolex - that's all US Naval units up until about 1980.Prince Harry wearing his  Explorer II looked smart in his Utilities (Not Sure if British Units use that term - if any unit does anymore) Friends would often send me picks of his Rolex in the field in Afghanistan. I wouldn't wear a Rolex in the field for sure.

Jackie Stewart and Paul Newman both famously promoted Rolex over the years. I like this pic because it's two racing legends and a cool watch talking cars.

Chris Kyle served under Jocko Willink in the same unit. The Resco given to Chris Kyle was from the founder of Resco - a SEAL. Both of these guys are legends

As a kid in the 70's I was always influenced by cartoons and movie stars wearing watches.

But the one that really stuck with me over the years was the Monaco Heuer that Steve McQueen wore in Le Mans in 1971. Chronographs have been my jam ever since!

I’ll be honest, watching apocalypse now is that inspired me to get a Willard in my collection.  It’s a prospex reissue but I prefer the smaller thinner reissue than the original proportions of the vintage 6105.  Plus a modern Seiko diver is much more fun to wear in the sense that I don’t have to worry about the seals and gaskets

Very nice! I mean the watch, not what Willard went through. 😅
