Can't choose between these two..

As a first watch, which would you pick?

What I love about the Farer - Elvington II

- It is super flexible, I can wear it with any outfits
- It's a micro brand (I like the idea of owning a well made not widely known piece)
- It is quartz so the price is affordable and like the idea of owning a watch that is super accurate and will last a long time without much maintenance
- Cheaper compared to other offerings but still made with Saphire glass and good quality swiss movement

What I love about the Hamilton - Khaki Field Titanium 2022 (Black Dial)

- Love owning a piece of Hamilton's rich history
- It is very waterproof (100m), resilient, and designed to be the perfect field watch (I don't have to treat it so delicately)
- Titanium made, light but strong!
- Battle-tested design
- Love the idea of owning a strong and durable automatic watch as my first mechanical piece as part of my collection

Both brands are great choices in my opinion. But Hamilton design speaks to me more. So, which watch speaks to you more?? That should be your deciding factor.

·

Both great choices but I will go with Farer love the orange and blue hands…and I’m bias I love orange and blue…

As someone who recently got a Hamilton I’d say go for that the Farer is a beauty but the Hamilton is great 👍.

Hamilton Khaki is a classic field watch. I'd chose that one.

·

Which one would you think about more with regret if you did NOT purchase it ;)

·

I'm partial to chronographs & subdials, so the Farer for me, but ignore specs for a minute and which one is the louder voice saying "Pick me."

Haha agreed! Need to widen my ears and listen to what my heart is telling me more. Have a bad habit of getting indecisive sometimes.

·

Two very different propositions and either would be a fine choice. I'm keen to add a Farer to the collection but personally if I had to pick, I'd say the Hamilton.

·

I like how the Farer looks more, but I like the Hamilton's movement better. What's more important to you, looks or guts?

·

After having a few Farer's on my wrist at Windup Chicago a couple weeks back, I'd go with the Farer. They were very impressive watches in the metal. Way better than I expected. I have a Hamilton in my collection and they are fine watches, but I think the Farer design language is a bit more light hearted and fun. After all, it's about what makes you smile, right? The Farer would make me smile more.

·

My wife has become too used to the minimalistic aesthetics of Nomos and bauhaus-inspired Junghans Maxbill. Struggling to convince her to like the Hamilton lol.

I would say guts typically, but as a first watch, Farer would provide a lot more utility in terms of everyday wear as a fashion watch.

Great to hear they were better than you expected! That gives me lots of confidence thanks!

So, we have defined courage down to small mechanical watches? I feel so brave.

Incredibly; like a Victorian strongman. As silly as it sounds, you have to be Billy Big Bollocks to rock a 28mm these days. Oh, is that a ladies watch? No, it’s a vintage gents field watch you Luddite, get back in the sea where you belong. I have big wrists and impeccable taste, and you are wearing a dinner plate. How’s that crown treating you?

Love the look of the Farer, but I'm not interested in the "Q" word.

No down side on the Hammy. Great movement, great quality and great looks.

If the Farer had an automatic movement, I'd say buy both!

·

For a 1st watch, I would get the Hamilton Khaki Field in steel and with a bracelet. That has the versatility of wearing it in rough conditions and yet “dressy” enough for going to town with. That said, that Farer looks beautiful and it would make a great 2nd watch! 😁

·

Khaki all day, everyday. But I think it's a mistake to remove the date on the newer Ti-version...

·

I woukd take the Hamilton. I’m not a fan of the subdials on the Farer.. Never like 2-6-10 arrangements and they seem a little too big. Meanwhile, the pushers look comically small. Silver hands with white lume spending most of their time over top of those giant sundials is not a great choice for legibility. 4:00 date window is another strike. An absolute deal breaker for me is when chronograph subdials start chopping of hunks of the arabics numbers.

I REALLY like a lot of what Farer does, but this onedoesn’t seem to be a very cohesive or well thought out design.

I have the Farer that you're pondering.   I'm completely satisfied with it.  Even though it's a quartz, it has some nice little surprises with the chronograph function.

If you're looking for heritage and brand recognition then it's Hamilton all the way.  I personally only feel comfortable in a 38mm KF.  The lug length is too long otherwise.

Oh my, that's beautiful! It looks great, I was worried the colors made it feel "cheap" or "plastic/toyish" But the quality looks really good! :)

Yeah, this edition of Hamilton is superbly designed, they really listened to their wearers this issue imo.

I will save you the 1800 word rant that I have stored up concerning "heritage" and Hamilton. I may turn it loose someday, but not today.

If you like the colors and chronograph functionality go for the Farer. There is a generation of watch purchasers that believe that a Hamilton Khaki or a Seiko 5 should be their "first mechanical watch." That is clever marketing, no more.

Thanks for your insight!

I'd pick the Hamilton for a couple of reasons.

  1.  The Hamilton design is more subdued/timeless, so it will remain just as cool in 10 years as it is now.
  2. Hamilton makes quartz Khaki Field watches, so you can get the ease of use/service in the more versatile package.
  3.  The Farer looks like a mash-up of "good ideas", that may age poorly for your tastes. Three different hand colours on one watch?

Yeah point number 3 was a serious concern.

It doesn't feel toyish at all.  Here it is with a different stap.  (I'm really trying to sell you on it).

·

For the different looks - Would go for the Farer. Really like their out of the box designs and color combinations.

For a more understated and more conservative look - Would go for the hamilton. It has more pedigree, more conservative look that won't be outdated in a few years.

It all depends in your preferences and you wardrobe and activities you would do with the watch.

For my kind of work and daily wearing would go for the hamilton, however really like the color combo of the Farer.

·

Hammy

feels the safer bet

and you get to say hammy

·

As a first watch, I'd go for the Hamilton. Even if it would be fun to own the Farer, it's more of a second/third watch in my eyes.

Look at the used market to save a bit of money on the Hamilton (compare price with gray market, and look at price trends). That way you might also skip the babying phase, and go straight to using the watch in all sorts of situations.
