Best Watch for My 10yo Daughter?

Can anyone recommend a decent watch I could get for my daughter for Xmas? she is learning to tell the time and doesn't have a watch, and she knows that daddy loves watches, so I guess it would be nice if I got her one.

Criteria

  • Must be able to take some reasonably rough ware
  • Not too expensive

Read: if it gets smashed up by accident then daddy wont bust into tears.

  • Not be a toy watch or a watch aligned with kids' fashion or trends
  • Be analogue
  • Quartz is ok
  • Suit a small wrist, obv.
  • Not a smartwatch, looking for a watch here.
  • Splash of colour or child-friendly design would help

I've never shopped in this category before so thought that I would see if anyone else has done that.

Thanks, Everyone.

Casio have some nice options depending on her taste. About £25 I think. 100m water resist and I bet they are tough. 👍

Great shout, I think I'd need to check on what colour ways on the dials they have there (and try and remind myself that I'm buying for her and not me!)

You might consider the GS SBGD209.  At only $250,000 it's quite a steal.

But, you better hurry up, as they only made 3 in the world, and I picked up 2 of them for my 6 and 9 year-old's.

There was thread before with list of nice kid friendly watches…I forget a lot of folks recommend good ones in that thread..

found one review thanks to @Fieldwalker

If she's up for the weird display and 40mm size, my 10yo loves my So Labs.

This may be too big for her wrist, but it has the advantage of analog and digital, so she would look at the analog and check the time there with the time on the digital, so she will get to know where the hands are at what time. https://www.casio.com/us/watches/casio/product.AQ-800E-7A/

This might work; again, check the size. https://www.casio.com/us/watches/casio/product.MQ-24D-7E/

Lots of good options here, and Timex was my first watch when I was her age. https://www.timex.com/browse/collections/kids-watches/ There are several plain dials if you don't want to go with the watches that are primarily for little kids. Since she's 10 you will probably want to look at something she can wear into her tween and early teen years.

And, although this is a no-name watch, I really like it. https://www.amazon.com/Children-Analog-Waterproof-Teaching-Learning/dp/B08XJFDKMB/ref=sr_1_46?crid=3G7AZTOD5ONTR&keywords=kids+watches+for+girls+9-12&qid=1669659940&sprefix=kids+watches%2Caps%2C116&sr=8-46

Hopefully, that will give you some ideas and places to start.

I gave my 10 year old grandson a Casio GA-2100 last year and he loves it (the "skeleton" case really appealed to him, but they come in a huge array of colors that could also appeal to kids). It includes both an analog display and a digital display which can be configured to show the time, so it can be great for learning to tell time. It's a bit big for his wrist, but he wears it proudly.

My niece and nephew liked their Flik Flaks

Casio square quartz.

Amazon, currently discounted at $17.

Different colors available.

·

Look up "TIMEX TIME MACHINES". Some very kid-friendly watches that are quite durable.

I ordered two Blok watches for my kids.   The watches are a little smaller than I expected, but only because i didn't look at the specs.  But I hope this will help them learn to tell time and seem like better velcro straps than the moonswatch lol

Thank you all so much for the input here, it has been super useful to see what was out there for my daughter, I've looked up every watch that was linked here, I'm also very happy this community exists, I've not been here for long, but praise be to @WatchCrunch  and the wider community!

Thank you to @Ichibunz and @thekris, (and @Fieldwalker for their review, which sealed the deal) I'm going to go with the Blok, you are the elves to my Santa 🤣 although this one will of course be from Dad!

Good work, with gratitude, Mr Hyde.

Have you looked at Block watches?  They are designed for kids.  https://blokwatches.com

CASIO without a doubt.

Casio. Timex. Swatch.

I immediately though of the Casio MQ-24 range. There are quite a few dial/color combos to choose from and can be had from around $15-$17 from what I've found. Should be splash resistant, made from resin and has a 38.8mm case:

Here's a listing for one on Amazon US: https://a.co/d/dqUXyX4

Edit: mm, maybe not the most colorful option but worth a look!

Hands down my favorite kids options at the moment.

I bought my 9yo a blok watch a couple of months ago. He absolutely loves it! The bezel really does make it very easy for kids to time themselves in their activities.

The strap is velcro, and it starts losing its stickiness on the second month. I emailed blok about this and found out they gave a newer version of the strap due to release next year, with better velcro. But in the mean time, they sent us a replacement strap. That's just great service!

Depending on your budget, the Tissot PRX 35mm could be a great choice. With 10 years, she’s not a baby anymore. Many of the watches recommended here seem like toys to me and overly stereotypical. The PRX is a quartz, should fit her with 35mm, will be a great watch even in 10 more years. Would be my pick

Seiko SNK803 with a small, colorful band in a shade she likes... it's a classic starter watch, fairly tough with the 7S26 movement, wears small at 37mm with short lug-to-lug, and has hour and minute markings to ease in telling time.
