One might have to go.

No, I didn't get a Sub... But I am strongly considering one.  I will turn 40 next year and I am saving up for something big to commemorate the occasion.  My buddy is letting me borrow his 5 digit sub to see if I bond with it, it just so happens that he wouldn't hate the idea of selling it to me.  The problem is, I have the BB58 and the SPB that I love, and the sub is fairly similar.... Could all three live in the same collection, or should I sell one to help fund the sub.... Or should I get something different than the sub?  Other options would be a vintage speedy or a black 5 digit Exp II.

If you've been here any amount of time & frequent the WRUW, you know my answer...

I borrowed a new Speedy from a buddy and I was a little underwhelmed.  I think an older one with a little patina might be nice though.

Variety is the spice of life.  Divers, divers, and more divers...  You already eat this every morning...

True, I have a few more divers actually... 7002, Monster, SKX.  I also have 3 vintage chronos and a Sinn 556.  Divers just get the most wear for me.  The SPB is getting the majority right now but its fairly new to me.

·

i think if you like the sub you should get one and sell bb 58 to help funding for the sub

·

The answer is clear: Buy the Sub and sell the other two!

This is tough. I love all three watches, I think I'm most drawn to the SPB143, Seiko's design language just speaks to me. That said, out of the three, the bb58 is unique with the gilted indices, hands and bezel insert, the sub and spb are more similar in those aspects (if that matters to you for the sake of variety). I think there is a place for all three in a collection if at all possible to pull that off.

That may be the plan.  I did buy the 58 around my first fathers day, so Id like to keep it.  But if I never wear it once I get the sub then why let it collect dust.  The SPB could be on the chopping block, but I like it... I just need all three.

Yeah, having all three for a time to see if the spb actually gets any wrist time sounds good. And you might find there are occasions where you don't want to wear a Rolex or a Tudor, like traveling to certain places. But maybe you have other watches for that already IDK. Either way they are all solid. And that 16610 is my favorite reference Sub along with the 1680, more refined and versatile than the current ones IMO.

Careful with the term “patina”, you’ll start a riot around here.

·

Except the fact that mine isn’t a 5-digit reference that is the setup of my dark dialled divers. I don’t see them as the same but I just had the sub for 3 weeks so it is maybe to early to say how redudant they will be. I guess these 3 watches give a clear indication of which design language I like.

·

I'm with @HotWatchChick69 on this, variety is always more interesting.

Also, the SPB143 or BB58 are perfect everyday day wear watches, so why not got for an occasional wear watch for special days/events?

LOL!  Because the Rolex 5 digit always makes you full 🤪

·

Buy the sub first. After that, see how do you feel about the other two. Don't decide anything too early 😊

·

@mpower5266 , I can't tell if it's your photography skills or the NATO but it looks great.  What brand of NATO strap do you have on your Seiko?

·

I was in the same predicament a few months back albeit my bb58 was the blue version and the spb was a loan from a friend. Had the opportunity to buy both the 5 and 6 digit no date sub in same period in the grey market. What happened next? I gave back the loan, sold both submariners and the bb58 when this was allocated to me;

Image

My reasons? both subs was underwhelming vs value, bb58 underperformed for me with alot of qc problems on two different sets (plus the lack of cohesion in its design bothered me) and spb wasnt getting enough wrist time. Hope that helps one way or another :)

·

If you want yet another diver 🙄 and you can afford the Sub, have a look at the GO SeaQ line:

(Once you own something like that, sell the Tudor, and keep the Seiko)

Looking forward to your Hodinkee “Reference Points” guest appearance in 10 years, where you go through the subtle dial differences in your vast collection of black dialed Rolex Submariners.

Those are cool but I dont love the idea of the fixed spring bars.  I have a CWC and its great but annoying that I cant toss it on a normal strap.

If I was looking at something in that price point, I would go Blancpain.  But they are too big and have the Invitcaish writing on the side.

I would love that..... My collection is pretty eclectic, I am just now getting into black dial divers.

·
Johnysteam

Quite a bit of overlap there. I would love to see your whole collection. The fact is if you dont get want you really want you will be miserable. So trade the Tudor. Go to it....now.

😀

I have some weird stuff.... gen 1 monster, 60's Wakmann, 70's reverse panda Tissot, Cwc, old Timex electric, SKX, Lejour chrono, etc etc.  I am just now starting to enjoy "plain" black divers. Haha.

I sold my SPP 143 when I got my 14060M No date sub. I miss the SPB but I knew it would get no wrist time with the Rolex. I've been wearing the sub daily for 2+ months now. I am a huge diver guy, so I really, only need one or two in my collection (subs).

That’s Rolex for ya. Slap “Explorer“ on an OP and suddenly its a new watch…nope just a different dial Oyster Perpetual.

Thanks!  I'm always looking for nice cheap NATOs.  I just wish they had more colors/styles.  Oh well, I can always use more grey NATOs

Not cheap but not bad... The hodinkee shop natos.  They are made by what used to be Toxic/UTE natos.

·

Whatever you do, awesome photo though. It looks like a shot fit for a Hodinkee article. And honestly it's kind of cool to have arguably the preeminent diver at three different price points in one collection. If this is your genre, and you end up enjoying all 3, nothing wrong with keeping them together.

Congrats on turning 40! It's all downhill from here.

Get the Sub and lose the rest. The sub holds its value, and you could always buy the other watches back.
