Casio F-91W
Calendar day 3 of 24 🎅 Today's timepiece isn't high horology, but was a technological marvel at some point. One of the world's most sold watches and one of the models that have been in continuous production for the longest. A favorite of the cheap skate, the nerdy dad, hipsters and watch nerds alike. Does it get points for being a watch for the masses or does it make it the plebeian choice and lose respect?

This is a watch I just don't get. Yes, it tells the time. But it's so dang tiny and how do you find that back light so endearing. They've updated that piece of junk and made it better(sort of), and people still buy the f91. This thing is overrated for nostalgia sake. Sorry.

I excluded the F91W from my only-one-watch-competition - I suspect there are enough trolls like me who always vote F91W, just because.
It's a classic. The legend is the one before the F91w, the...I want to say the F88 or F84 first popularized the design language and influenced that basic truncated square shape.

I think this is the most iconic of any Casio and that is saying a lot 😊

Life with the F-91W is the life of the free man. Durable, versitile, light and comfortable AND easy and cheap to replace if you somehow could manage to break it!! Not a worry in the world for the man with the F-91W.
Never had one, probaby never will since my W217H suit me better, but I recognise the horological significance of the F91W. It is both classic and overrated.

I've never owned it and wouldn't buy one now BUT due to its production length, popularity , simplicity and coolness it must be a teeny tiny legend!
For me, it's a classic because it brings me great memories from that era.

I said classic, as it's more of a meme than a legend. There are countless people that have put the F-91W through torture tests. I guess that would be the legend, the cheap little watch that takes punches way above its price point. It's hard to be a legend in your own time, although it's debatable whether the F-91W's time has past or not. Millions of people a year keep choosing it, so it's doing something right.
I feel for the haters, as there are a few "grail" watches that I wish would have disappeared decades ago, yet they persist, and this annoys me to no end.

It definitely is a fine example of amortisation of setup costs and economies of scale and no doubt millions of people buy them every year, but many millions more do not buy one because they can afford something better. Classic is not always desirable.
This is the very first watch that I ever owned. It's the watch that got me stuck in this horological nightmare. That makes this the most legendary watch ever. LOL
It's the watch you buy when you can't afford something better... It's the 1-ply toilet paper of watches.
It has its uses, but it's not something worthy of celebration.

It has historical significance, but I don't get why it's so popular now. I find it rather ugly and while I can definitely see it as appealing to a retro niche, its reach far exceeds that niche due to what is seemingly plain hype/meming.
There are better watches for the same money from none other than Casio itself. However, the F-91W is a solid choice in terms of watches at its price in general. The features far exceed analog watches and the design is functional despite the appearances.
The marvel of this watch is that it's designed so well, that although it's an inexpensive watch, it will withstand so much that it'll literally last you a lifetime.

It does what Rolex says it will with the total cost with the watch, batteries and small screwdriver that in a lifetime will not pass the the cost of one service 😅

I think you've made an argument for legendary status there 😊 People choose this because of it's significance or it's know quality for a low price.

I'm really, really torn between Legend and Classic. Design wise it is the continuation of F-84 language with minor differences only, but the amount of stories around this watch create a substantial background to bring that to the classic category... or even legendary? All right, all right, let it stay classic yet and we'll see if it even can get even bigger.

In my opinion F-91W is a true manifestation of minimalism.
