Kismet Inspires First Luxury Purchase

So I’ve been saving for a while. I thought I was going to get a 556i, then an Aquis, then an Anordain, then an Omega. And finally I had saved to the point where I was debating either the new Seamaster 300 or maybe the Omiwatari after trying both on.

Did one speak to me more? What was going to be my personal relationship with the watch? Did either watch even represent me?

That’s when the universe said “get the Omiwatari already”.

I’m a musician (alto sax) and in doing my research I discovered that Grand Seiko is the official timekeeper of Jazz at The Lincoln Center. Very cool. Theo and Harris even did this great video with pianist Isaiah J. Thompson.

The next night I was out and after buying something at the market, got my change: one dollar (a Canadian loonie. And on the coin was a special edition tribute to Oscar Peterson, a Canadian, and one of the great jazz pianists of all time.

Later that night I’m doing some light reading and my news aggregator tells me that the JPY is hitting a recent low against the CAD. So onto Chrono24 I go, and after some back and forth (where I learned more about how Chrono24 works — first purchase) and a few weeks of waiting, I have a great story to tell about my first ever luxury watch purchase.

I did! Found it via Chrono24 and the dealer was very good to work with. The hardest part was communicating around the time difference and hoping the currency exchange would hold. 😅

Agreed. Manual wind spring drive is a great old school / new school combo, but the dial is a subtle show stopper. GS dials are like good art - they make you want to stop and look, and once you do, you can’t help noticing all the details.

You bought well! I own and love my Oris Aquis and 3 Omegas, however the GS is a wonderful and special watch. Very good choice for a singular luxury purchase.

Incredible watch.  So glad you didn't jump too soon and buy a dive watch.

They’re great watches and I still look at them with dream eyes, but I’m pretty happy. 😍
