hello fellow crunchers. So I want to give my brother his first watch for his 37th birthday, just tired of getting him high quality Japanese meats the past 5 years lol
anyways, he’s been a machinist the past 15 years and is currently an assistant professor at a university where he makes sure engineer students don‘t be break the machines and teaches the basics I assume.
so the simple question, best watch to buy a machinist ?
This account is verified. WatchCrunch has confirmed that this account is the authentic presence for this person or brand.
When you say 'machinist' I instantly thought of train and stuffs, so what's there to give but an Omega Railmaster! (insert evil laugh)
It's an absolute beauty for me! But the price is you know.. Really steep for mortals like me..
Soo, let me ask you this one time.. how much are you willing to spend for this gift??
High quality Japanese meat sounds awesome.
Anyway I thought of the Breitling Aerospace. Pretty cool watch with low maintenance!
I'd say a field watch with a sapphire crystal. This would be a good option...

I would suggest an ISO compliant diver's watch; good water resistance, anti-shock, and anti-magnetic. A solid tool watch for a machinist, but also something that could be dressed up nicely for a professor. There are lots of different selections at different price points, depending on how much you wanted to spend. Here is one of my favorites that can be found for $200 or less.
Citizen Promaster Diver
As is usually the case for inquiries like this one, what’s the budget?

I ain't even gonna pretend that I don't have a conflict of interest here:
Thus, with all that said, get your brother the Baby Alpinist!
High quality Japanese meat...That is normally found on Tinder, Grinder or eHarmony LOL! Go big or go home ... Get him the Omega Moonwatch PERIOD! Good luck and enjoy the journey 🤙🏽
As jbird said "What's your budget?' As a fellow machinist I would say a watch with a mechanical movement and display case back are musts. If you go automatic, try to get a micro rotor or a skeletonized rotor so it doesn't block the view. If your budget is high enough, A Lange & Sohne or Glassutte Original make some of the best hand finished movements available.
How about a Unimatic, small company owned by the founders who are industrial designers. Quite unusual and interesting, nice range within budget including different movements. I love my U4.
Robust. Intersting caseconstruction and metals. Doesn't break the bank. Promaster Though
All righty so first of all I agree with the baby Alpinist because it’s gorgeous and has so much to offer for the price. You can use it like a diver but it dresses up very well.
anyway I have two more ideas for you.
so first of all any Seagull chrono just because of the movement. Looking at it can be very distracting
I can also see why would want to get him something higher quality because of your budget and for a Professor I would get him this:
Also very beautifully to look at the movement and timeless looks and versatility because of the 100m water resistance. I know you have to wait for this one quite a while but you could either get him this next year or look for a good used example
It’s hard to suggest anything without knowing what your budget is, but I’ll have a stab. If he’s into engineering he would definitely appreciate a watch from Hanhart, especially a Hanhart Chronograph 💯

Generous to a tee my friend.
Let me know when it starts, remember I'm down under 🤣 and I'll throw my hat in the ring and have a bid on that little beauty 💯

With that kind of budget, you’ve got options galore!
Presumably as a machinist, he’d appreciate a watch with serious craftsmanship involved. So I might suggest a chronograph for all of the parts involved in making one:
This Longines is in budget and is a rare chronograph that’s also got a 200M WR rating:

This Hamilton Intramatic is a classic looking chronograph:

If he wants a dressier option now that he’s a professor, might I suggest this:

Or, for an added complication and more classic looks:

Divers are also a very versatile and more rugged option:
