Who would of thought that this is the most popular type of watch in the 21st Century?

It's funny how everything comes full circle. Trends come and go, what's popular and what's hot. What comes to mind when you take a look at the image below?

Stylish? Link to the past? Or more often thought... Superfluous? It's so "extra"? For sure if you own a pocket watch and you whip it out to tell the time, you will no doubt receive comments: of respect, admiration or most probably ridicule. "Train conductor?"

Yet, nearly everyone technically owns a pocket watch, the action of pulling out your phone to check the time.... Is it not just the same? Pocket watches are the most common types of watches in this day and age. Anyone dispute this?

So the bigger question is....  Is Apple technically the biggest watch manufacturer in the world? 😎

Love your thinking! And I suppose you are correct, most people do seem to check the time on their telephones now, very few of us wearing these strange machines strapped to our wrists.

On a totally separate point, I think vintage pocket watches actually make really lovely desk clocks.

I’m with you on the pocket watch analogy.  I’m guessing if you added watches and phones, Apple would be the global leader in “watches” sold.

I would have never looked at phones that way. Interesting and fairly true.  But I would never consider Apple or android a watch company. I will not consider smart watches a watch. Oh, I know, it's in the name. But only in the name. They are devices that have a time feature. Watches maybe antiquated in this day and age, but I'll continue to wear one over a link to my phone.

Dang! That there could be a neat pocket watch app idea. Hit the app, tilt the phone sideways and the closed pocket watch graphic comes up. Tap the watch and the graphic animates to open the lid and show the dial. Tap it again to close the lid and close the app.

You heard it here first.

To give it a slightly tamagochi vibe, occasionally you would have to wind the watch by swiping your finger over the crown a few times otherwise it eventually stops.

But a watch that tells GMT function, moon phase, calendar and date etc are considered watches?

Really depends what we define as watches!

And what about grandfather clocks?? 😂

Perish the thought...🙄

·

I wonder what the "Smart watches aren't watches" people think.

·

If so, then Panasonic is the largest manufacturer of wall clocks.

I'm watching a YT video by Vintage Watch Services and he's got a Montrose triple calendar chronograph on the bench with a Breguet overcoil balance spring and I almost want to find a watch with one and hang it under glass, un-cased, just to watch that balance spring in action.

Really enjoying this thread.

So I thought - let's go to Google and put in Apple Pocket Watch and see what comes up...

I think you are onto something here...

Smart Pocket Watch: All You Need to Know
Tom Ford and his pocket Apple Watch

I could keep going...but you get the idea...I'll finish with this thought...

Apple makes consumer electronics, Breguet makes watches.

😂 hahahaha. Shhhh. Yeah it's a stretch.

But on another note.. 127.5M smart watches were sold in 2021 and around 30% were Apple watches. Would Fitbits, Garmins, G shocks be consumer electronics?

But you shouldn't be able to do what your phone can do. It shouldn't be able to connect to your phone. I know some watch companies have smart watches now. But they're still grounded to real watches. To me it's what @Velomax says. It's a consumer electronic and not a watch.

That’s why I initially got an Apple Watch. I was tired of using my phone as a pocket watch.
