Night mode on!

You’re out camping with the family and you have to have a trusted watch in the middle of the night. Could be feeding the kids, heating up a bottle or just getting a break. What is your go to in this scenario? Something dependable, trustworthy, robust and nothing flashy. As dads, one of the biggest wins is being responsible, reliable and robust, like my Tudor Ranger. I claim this as a metaphor to my watch.

Why would I take any of those?

If it's something specifically for dark use, I'll obviously get something with a light, like a Casio Lineage, a Tomex Indiglo model or a digital Casio.

Hahaha I only have these in my collection. Would love to try your recommendations.  I would usually go for anything Casio but it’s so cliche and I used one for over 12 years serving in the Singapore Army. Want to try something else now.

A G Shock will always light up in the darkest conditions exactly the same whenever it's asked, watches with lume need to be charged, I've used my 5610's backlight to find keys in the dark before, either that or buy something with tritium lume so it glows all day every day for about 15  years, by which point night feeding won't be an issue!

·

I voted for C, the G Shock. I would use my solar Casioak. The backlight is really bright. I have actually used it at night like a mini flashlight. 😁

The solar power also means it will charge during the day so no danger of a battery going dead.

·

G-Shock is probably the right answer, but I would likely take my Ranger. or both my Ranger and my G-Shock. But if only one, my Ranger. Cause mechanical is cool 😁 (even if the G-Shock is infinitely more useful).

·

if i know I will have to feed the kids in the middle of the night.....I definitely will not go out camping with them 😂

·

I'd take your DJ if all else fails you can trade it for a lot of supplies and food

Fully agree

After Covid we are revenge traveling.

·

Love my cassioak, but honestly the ranger would be easier to read at night. No need to get a second hand on the watch to turn on the light.

·

I love my mechanicals but I always pack a G-Shock as well where ever I go 😁

·

I can't even think of a single scenario where I would go out for hiking or camping with one of my mechanical watches instead of taking the GW-M5610U. TBH the idea would never even cross my mind.

Diver with a timing bezel and great lime (BB58)

Although I love the Tudor ranger, imo a G-Shock is best suited for that kind of situation.

But that Tudor... 😍

I take my Seiko or Hamilton Field watches camping, which we do 6-8 times every summer.

Now for overnight backpacking, I would move to a G-Shock.

I miss my seiko 5 kinetic. after 20 years it finally failed and they said it couldn’t be fixed. That would have been my choice too.

·

I'm not a camping guy, but if I were, I certainly wouldn't take anything of value with me.

Sometimes after adventure with my family we have to show up for a nice dinner event. So have to be flexible

My Alpinist has seen duties like this, but the best combo of reliability, legibility and convenience will be my Prospex LX.   (even over my digital watches, and phones don't connect and battery dies fast with no charging)

Of the options above I reckon the Explorer is closest, but would still pick my Seiko over it.  I hear the roars of protest! but.. Hear me out  😃.  Seen here second from left owning his friends :

300m diver.  Grade 5 Ti and 110g all in.  Made secretly by the Grand Seiko studio, despite the Seiko label.

It has better 4am legibility than battery powered watch lights like a Gshock because

  1. it is not impacting your dark adjusted eyesight with sudden brightness

2. it needs no button to press to read it, and

3. it's bright and easy to read for the full entirety of the night.  5am watch check - EZ

It crushes my swiss watches in this regard, which loose the plot after a few hours.

I test all these things when I'm on call at the hospital and getting disturbed at all hours of the night.

Another perk: it uses a Grand Seiko 72hr spring drive and keeps better time than a second a month (~2 sec in 70 days for mine)  It keeps better time than my digital watches!

Last, it's got a calendar wheel - I hate not knowing the date, and if phone is off, dead, or forgotten this saves me.

Lume that crushes all comers!

Extreme temp and sports all good!

Off grid family survival: it's got you covered.

No charging a phone out here, and they don't connect anyway!

One sort of downside is worth mentioning: total dominance but stealth appearance.  To all who glance at it, it's a 300 buck black Seiko that's probably got a 4R35 😂  .  So for the surprise fancy dinner: Explorer wins I reckon!

I love your shots.  What camera do you use or app?  I've never been able to capture such shots with the Lume.  Thanks for sharing.

·

I guess the correct answer is the G Shock but if I’m camping I probably got a flashlight, and a cell phone. I want my Ranger because it’s nice. The same reason I want it when I’m not camping.

Thank you!!

I'm no specialist in that regard - An Iphone 7 is the fairly ghetto camera I use.  It's gonna sound cheezy but that watch kind of makes lume shots easy, since you don't need it to be very dark.  Even in daytime you see a bit of glowing going on.

G-Shock for sure, but I wouldn't go to yellow.

Which reference do you have?

I bought the 216570 in 2014 but then sold it in 2020 because I'd lost a bunch of weight and my wrist shrank and I became self conscious about how big it looked. But then I missed it SO much, I instantly regretted it and realized it was a mistake (and also that I was ok with a large watch), and right when I decided to just buy another one the 226570 was released. I got the first one that arrived at my AD! Which was nice because now I can feel like I just upgraded the movement, (and a few other minor details) instead of selling and then buying back the same model.

·

Spot on!! Love the story behind your decision making. You have a great AD

I really do. He knew I’d been regretting selling the first one, which he sold me 6 years prior. I came in a Week before Watches and Wonders and said I wanted to get the old one before the new one replaced it, because I was afraid the new one was going to have a ceramic bezel. He said to come back the day of the announcement and decide which one. We watched the Rolex announcement together, and I chose to get the new one! I think it took 6 weeks until they shipped it. It felt like forever (even though I’ve waited much longer for watches).

·

I love them all! I just tried on the Ranger for the first time this weekend and loved it! I think the Ranger is the more sensible option than the Rolex so that I can spend more money on the kiddos! (I’m ignoring the Casio and Timex since those are battery-operated and the battery could totally die in the middle of the night and you’d be left with nothing! Ha!)

·

Perfect hiking watch! I always have a G-Shock in my pack or on my wrist when in the wild. My little solar G is my go to backpacking watch.

At night I love being able to quickly check the time without the lume from my watch acting like a light saber blinding tent mates
