Cleaning Your Watch - Do and Don't

I was just getting ready to post a photo to WRUW, and was a bit horrified to see how dirty my watch was when captured in a close up. Dust that accumulates around the bezel, and lugs, and wherever else it settles, hardens into gunk that is resistant to a gentle cleaning. Watching some watch repair videos, I was turned on to the use of orange wood sticks (used for manicures) as a tool that can be used to scrape off this gunk without scratching the metal. Combined with an extra soft tooth brush, and polishing cloth, I managed to get most of the gunk off. I would be interested to hear what anyone else does to deal with this problem.

Soft tooth brush and warm soapy water. I have also used sticks for tough gunk.

Is soapy water OK to use? I thought I read somewhere that soap may degrade the water resistance.

I have just washed the wife's Rolex with soapy water and used a tooth brush then rinsed it in running cold water , manufacturers always say rinse in water after being in the sea (unfortunately the wife says she can't tell the difference)

For future try not to let it get gunky. I manage this point by taking off my watch for sweaty or dirty chores etc.... and following the procedure described by Greg @Aurelian above. The most important thing is to not let the gunk settle in there in the first place.

Unfortunately my wife uses that much hand cream it goes everywhere, then fake tan and finally sun cream on holiday, the watch doesn't stand a chance

I use a soft toothbrush and warm water, dry on a paper towel, and finish with a Q-Tip and microfiber cloth.

Pro tip! If you cut that Q-Tip at an angle, the half handle is awesome for cleaning gunk out of tight areas around the crown, caseback, lugs, etc.

True that.

I just wear it as I give my boy a bubble bath. Always sparkles after that.

The only choice then is to clean the watch daily, that is normal for divers, surfers, and heavy product users lol!
