Is the new IWC Ingenieur worth $11,700?

This Tudor Royal 38, is about 4-5 times cheaper. However, it is not designed by Gerald Genta. Do you guys think the Gerald Genta lineage is really worth the extra 8 grand?

This Zenith Defy is $9000. That's still $2000 cheaper than the IWC.

My guess is that it will be worth it to enough people.

Worth & value are murky things here in the luxury watch world; much more so than in other realms. Why? Because most people do not need watches and those that do need them can spend as little as $10-20 and get a watch that serves their needs.

Pretty much anything else is a luxury item (yes, even $100 G-Shocks) and luxury items are worth what someone will give you for them.

Of course, I'm sassy and anytime someone asks if X watch is worth $XXXXX the answer will always be no even I'll be the dope that goes to my AD and buys it.

This morning I saw a Bark and Jack's video about the Ingenieur. I was going to give my local IWC boutique a call. Then I thought it won't hurt to check the price. I thought IWCs were usually reasonable. Then BAM, I saw the $11,700 price tag. Sticker shock.

Of the 3 shown here, I prefer the Zenith.

Well, aside from the general admonition that value is impossible to ascertain when it comes to completely superfluous luxury items, I think the one thing we can say with great certainty is that while the MSRP is $11k, it will not be selling for $11k.

I've never seen an IWC sell for full retail...ever.

Me too. I think the Zenith has a higher horology than the IWC. Because the IWC uses the same movement as the Mark XVIII Pilot watch. Which is not that special to be honest.

·

Difficult to price based on the movement alone. In fact, as alluded to above, value on any luxury watch is tough to define. Aside from the Zenith (lovely watch) as a whole package the watch that comes closest to me is the Chopard Alpine Eagle 41 that I mentioned in an earlier thread - that's priced at £12,900 in the UK. I suppose you could also price it against the Oris Pro Pilot X 400, or for that matter the Tissot PRX, both being integrated bracelet steel sports watches! I do think there's something very special about this design though and I think it well sell pretty well and likely increase the value of the older models, at least in the short term.

·

It's a great looking watch! Caught my attention going through the "watches and wonders" pages this morning but the price tag was a bit of a shock. If I am spending that type of money on a watch, I am looking elsewhere first!

·

nice tool watch that no one with the tools can afford. The exposed screws are useless as the bezel is screw down. vintage inspired is getting tired and expensive.

Same. I thought someone made a mistake while uploading the price tag. But nope - IWC apparently thinks, the hype justifies this price. I would’ve happily bought it for €7k or even €8k, but 12.900€ is just ridiculous

The movement is pretty good, but the new Ingenieur costs about TWICE as much, as the Mark XX on the steel bracelet with the exact same movement.

Another problem: Not only does the Mark 18 have the same movement, it also has a T fit adjustment system for quick and easy bracelet change.

The new Ingenieur doesn’t have a T fit adjustment system😮😮😮

·

In euro they are priced 13000, 1k more, wtf?

This looks like a steal now....... The vintage Ingenieurs

It seems like IWC is going after a different market for this watch than it's traditional customer base. I think they want to sell to people who want an AP or VC but who want to spend less. These people will find this watch as a Genta alternative from a quality brand and pull the trigger. The pricing is just way off base for a three-hander compared to the existing product portfolio. It also reduces water resistance over the previous model and passes over the micro-adjust clasp on so many other models in its collection that are far cheaper (and loved by customers). There's also no strap change system despite that feature being included on almost all new IWC models. It makes no sense. IWC makes some great watches, but they went nuts on the pricing for this one while abandoning many of the features existing customers love (micro-adjust and strap exchange system).

IMO people that want an AP or VC are not going to settle for a 12k 'consolation' watch.

Either they can afford to buy the watch they want grey or they can't afford to spend 12k on a watch that isn't the one they want.

Love the aqua dial but price is way out of line. I will probably try to find a preowned one for under $10k next year.
