Introducing for 2023: The Sub-Just

A long time ago (about 2009) I bought a fake Rolex Datejust and Submariner 16610 for shits and giggles while I was living in Asia.

I have never actually worn them for obvious reasons. Both still run great, even though they're awful DG2813 movements.

Recently I've taken up watch-making as a hobby, started tinkering today, and ended up with: The Sub-Just.

It's a Rolex Submariner 16610 case, Rolex Datejust dial, cyclops glass delete, Milgauss hand set, Oysterflex strap. All knock-off parts.

I quite like the result, and may even wear it.

My question is; would I be wearing a fake Rolex, or does this qualify as something quite different that will deceive nobody, nor is it intended too?

I would guess that most people (non watch nerds) would look at the name and think it's a Rolex. I think the question is, how will you feel if someone mentions it. If you don't care (and you don't live somewhere it'll get you into trouble), then wear it. Alternatively, you just could replace the dial 🤷🏾‍♂️

If someone asks then I will happily bore them with the details that's it's 3 watches rolled into one, and in no way trying to pass as a genuine example of any of the three.

Since you are playing around, fight the establishment. Make an avant-garde watch vs a Rolkenstein.

  1.  The indices are easily removed.  Just use an exacto blade.  They are glued using jewelers glue.  Glue something other than the crown or paint the crown. Or move the crown location to 6 position.

2.  The printed writing is easily removed using a little alcohol based solution and a wooden tooth pick.  Made remove some text to make it even more unique, like datejust.  It would balance out the words.

3. Add more orange to balance out the seconds hand.

4.  If you are really going to play, do it loud.  Like them iced out rolexes. 😀

5.  Theft deterrent.  Now you can truly wear it anywhere.

Thanks for the info.

So you think I need to go further?
I might remove the crown logo at 12, and colour over 'ROLEX' with a black marker.

I plan on changing strap to mix it up further, as I dislike that style of buckle.
Thinking black paratrooper with an orange pinstripe.

I once drew a dial on paper for a SLAVA parts watch. :)

You could remove the crown to paint it orange? Then glue it back.

You could use a illustration marker to colour the word rolex.  Be careful, the marker can dissolve the letters.

All fun things to do with the dial.

The point being to make it look good enough to tell it has been changed, but also a statement to wear.

My sugess 'starbucks' with eta 2428 movement.  I removed the logo at 12, 11 and 1 indices and glued in a modded metal starbucks mug badge.  Removed the two lines of lower text. I wear the watch out whenever and where ever I feel like.

You could remove the crown to paint it orange? - Good idea.

I'm personally against even homage watches and agree that further mods should be done to fully de rolex the watch.  I think any lay person looking at it would assume it's a legit rolex in it's current form.

Nice job on the mods and I'd love to see the final statement piece when it's done.

Took that one apart shortly after. The novelty wore off. I'll do a build with the 16610 case someday.
