Updated: Power reserve indicators, yay or nay?

Here are my 4 watches with a power reserve indicator on the dial. I think they look pretty neat and do serve a purpose, but purists would prefer it on the back. What’s your take and what are your favorite implementations of a power meter?

I think they’re cool and add a nice variation to the dial options available.
If someone doesn’t like it, there’s plenty watches out there without.
Me personally I’m very fussy with how a date window is done and generally prefer no date. So I look for that. Each to their own I guess

It depends on the watch. I own a Seiko with a spring drive movement and I feel like the power reserve indicator has become a signature component of watches that feature that technology so I don't mind seeing them on the dial.

Image

On the other hand, I'm not too sure how useful it actually is, at least to me. My spring drive seems to self wind very efficiently. Even if I spend most of a weekend just lounging around, the needle on my reserve indicator will barely move at all as long as the watch is on my wrist. If my LX is off my wrist for a couple days, I'll unscrew the crown and wind it back up, but I'm already in the habit of doing that with my other mechanical watches. It's not like I need a visual reminder to do that.

·

I like them and wish more of mine had them. My favourite is this one on my ECA.

Yeah I like them , actually more useful than I first imagined.

·

I’ve got a few watches with them and like the complication, it adds interesting variety. Like your Winter on the strap BTW!

·

i like them on the back. its more cleaner for me

·

The power meter on my citizen eco-drive's is more practical imo. They can go a long time without light but eventually it serves as a prompt to wear it or lay it in the sun or lamp for a while

My watch collecting journey has taught me that I lean somewhat boring and very pragmatic.  My first big purchase was this one:

Image

I love a date complication and very much appreciate the visual power reserve indicator because my brain is always wondering how much wind my watch has. Just how I’m built I suppose.

Count me on team power reserve indicator on the dial. That said, I think GS does a super classy implementation. There are many out there that I find visually unappealing.  The NF also does an awesome implementation.  Love that touch of yellow.

·

I think they are really neat. I'd love to have a watch with one. I haven't found it yet though. It's one of those things that's so easy to do poorly and oh so difficult to get right. I did once see a GS with the power reserve on the back, under the display case back. That was a brilliant idea!

·

Done right, they’re wonderful. Personally when GS place it on the horizontal 3-9 plane I think it looks MUCH better than at 8 o’clock… more like your North Flag. Obviously Lange and GO do them really well too. Like any other complication there’ll be lovers and haters. its all subjective 😍😍

·

I think they’re cool, I have one with a power reserve that I got from my dad and is indicated by color. I’ll have more that include this complication in the future.

·

I don't have one yet but it's something I'd like try out.

·

Love them, but don’t own a watch with one yet.

ya, it's one of the things that drawn me to the NF. I really like how the power reserve indicator is actually a rotating disc as opposed to a hand, making it lie complete flat on the dial. A nice contemporary touch that is not seen in any other Tudor pieces. :P

·

I like them. So it’s a yay for me!

Interesting... I used to dislike it, but recently I got a watch with such complication, I bought this watch without having the chance of interacting with it first, hoping that if this indicator was to bother me, It would not until the point of disliking the watch. It did not bother me at all, and now, I believe is safe and accurate to say that I like it; however I think that if the same watch came with the option, I´d pick the no-indicator version.

unfortunately, we don’t get to choose. There is simply no such thing as a perfect watch.

Where did you get this blue strap? :)

I like me a power reserve indicator when I can get one. I have that Nomos. Too bad then only use the power reserve on like two watches.

Image

I the OP's sister watch. Yeah, sure, on the back may be better, but I mostly 🙄 at the grousing about it on the front. Symmetry is overrated. It fills some blank space. It's definitely useful. I now have a GS with a Hi-Beat movement, so no power reserve, and I miss it.

They can be really badly implemented though. It's just godawful on a Citizen Chronomaster.

That citizen could be the best example of PRI done wrong 🤮🤢

Strap code. By far this is my favorite strap for my Skyflake. Haven’t changed it since putting it on. It’s super comfortable as well.

See… I do believe perfect watches exist (depending on particular taste) in mi case, no-date sub and the 39mm pelagos are just perfect; however, such ”perfection” is too close to boredom…

·

PR indicators are very cool complications imo. I like them on manual watches but I don’t find them very useful on automatics, esp if you wear it regularly.

This is very nice. Like how it’s a balanced design with a mirrored seconds sub dial.

😍 @Max

I never understood the need for a power reserve indicator on an automatic watch considering it is constantly winding while being worn. On a manual wind I can understand it's existence as the mainspring is constantly being wound down. That being said, I am one of those that thinks it should be on the back of the watch as I feel they are an eyesore on the dial.

·

Yes Sir.

·

As other Crunchers have said, as long as it's done tastefully it's good.

Here's hoping the boffins at RM don't put a PRI on their watches. They'd probably mark it with a ⛽, mark my word.

Shudder

·

My only watch with a power reserve is my Casio Pro Trek, but I think they are really cool when done tastefully like on the #lange1

·

It depends on the design of the indicator. I personally don’t like the one on Grand Seiko, IWC’s is neat!
