What are your "meh" watches

Hi, Crunchers.

Has anyone else drooled over a watch online only to have it leave you cold once you get it?  It took a few missteps and returns to realize I don't really enjoy clean, classic dress watches.

In descending order of meh-ness for me (from massive meh to mild meh) are the Mido Baroncelli, the Orient Maestro and the Longines 1824 beige dial.

#Meh

It's knowing what you really like I guess. I know myself just looking at a watch if it's for me or not. I know that your 3 aren't for me but they're all very good watches. But they're not my style. This is from my prospective.

Now you know a little more of yourself and know what to expect from a certain style of watch.

Cheers!

I appreciate what they are trying to do, but I want my G-Shocks to look as tough as they are.

Just not for me.

Sinn and Damasko are meh for me. They are objectively the “best” wrist watch. Great specs, balanced, symmetrical, great legibility at a glance, and strap monsters. They are too utilitarian and brutalist in their design. I need a little playfulness.

·

For me it was the Wise AD9M.

Meteorite dial, 904l steel, a very nice looking movement in the display caseback all had me lusting after it. It came and meh was the word. I had issues with the service leading up to getting the watch and was worried that I’d paid Wise and they’d taken my money and then shut down as they were impossible to get hold of, which probably didn’t help.

While I respect your opinion on this and am not trying to change your mind, the reason for their popularity is  that it is a Swiss movement from an historic brand between $400 and $1000. There is no alternative that meets those three criteria.

Even though i could SEE it really well in the day , black with white markers , the unrough look and feel just didn t feel right , i gave it away to a good friend in Mexico , i payed double in Argentina for watches 😟 . I like the full metal versión but i wouldn t want to scratch it.

·

Zenith Defy, I thought it looked amazing, price was good, did all the research but when I finally managed to try one on I felt nothing, left it a few months and tried again and nothing. Just felt "meh" 🫤

Tissot meets those three criteria, no?

·

Tissot meets those three criteria, no?

No.  2 of the 3. They don’t have the heritage for the field watch which was put on the wrists of soldiers for 50+ years. The PRX, LeLoce, and Gentleman just don’t compare to the Khaki line.

·

Meh.

·

The Longines Conquest 39mm auto. Cant put my finger on it. Lusted after it for a while only to get it in hand & think...mmm nope. Not for me.

Have you not heard of Glycine?

·
wizard903

Tissot meets those three criteria, no?

Agreed.  Glycine also makes plenty of pieces that meet that criteria.  Often under $400.

·
wizard903

Fair enough, but you didn't specify that, by "heritage" (in your original post), you meant "heritage for the field watch."

I did…but then @JBird7986 pointed out Glycine, so I guess I’m still wrong.

I have the same feeling with Khali Field.

I like the designs and the lineup (except the abomination Khaki King). But the watch is person just falls short. Meh.

Except for the movement and design, the rest of the watch just feels incomplete. The lack of AR, the water resistance issue always kept me away from buying. If Hamilton puts AR coating, I would definitely get a bronze Khaki Field.

At the end of the day, there are countless options for time-telling… and you can slap an F91W on you wrist, leave it there ’til it falls off, then slap another on. Or even a Skmei.

Heritage, country of origin… only going to go so far.

But, if you’re gonna be looking at it every day, sometimes many times an hour, may as well be something you like the look of no?  Or something with attachment and sentimentality to other times and places?

Maybe it then reminds you of other things, maybe then it comes into play about brand, history, horology, but fundamentally… even successful brands can make a watch someone will find ugly, whether it’s Casio, Rolex, whatever.

And someone out there keeps designing those Invicta with the gold chains and the watches in the watches.

Time is relative, and taste is subjective.

The Orient Bambino Small Seconds. I love the idea, but the execution left me cold - it’s simply too big, and the date window is unnecessary.  Shrink it to 38 or 37mm and lose the date window and I’d be back in a heartbeat. Passed it on to a nephew, who loves it.

For me it’s the military connection.  But then I am a career military man, so there’s that 😬

I really like the WISE Adamascus with the meteorite dial, but it is probably less compelling than the other two WISE divers that I have. I remember when they were not being prompt responding to inquiries. I was worried as well that they would not deliver.

This is an attractive watch...

But this one is so much more attractive...

As is this one also...

I first saw WISE on @PeterKotsa YT channel. Maybe he has some ideas about what straps you could use to spiff up that meteorite dial.

Holyshite!! That red dial, that case, on that strap, absolutely gorgeous!!! You'd think that the red on the insert would throw it off but Hell no!!!

I agree that those divers look fantastic, but to be honest I just found the AD9M boring when I got it and I’ve tried it with a few different straps but it’s just not for me. Also the poor service has really soured Wise as a brand for me. You can’t knock the build quality but I don’t like feeling like I’m being ignored after a purchase.

Just not for me.

I am definitely the opposite. I started with a few of the round gshocks and I hated the chunky oversized fit. The casioaks fit my wrist so much better. Although I think my basic 5600 is still my #1 gshock

·

Every Speedy for me, besides the Moonshine (gold case, green dial). Most, if not all Grand Seikos. All Seiko 5s. Explorer II, all modern Submariners. All Patek besides the Calatrava.

That Meteorite is quite a difficult watch to match straps with thats for sure. Have you tried a light tan leather or even dark brown. Is suppose just experiment and see what your eyes like. Thats usually the best judge 👍👍

·

It depends on the watch type you like. I get that mehness feeling with chronos; I bought a few that leave me cold. In contrast to you I have drifted more toward dress watches since starting collecting. I agree though with your meh-ness order. I would wear all of these, but only barely the Mido - too simple, but not even good simple like a Junghans. The Longines is more my kind of watch, but there are better looking dress watches from Seiko and Citizen, for less money.

·

Casio. G shocks. Imho useful but disposable tools & as appealing as a smart watch. Just don't get it. Meh.

Also really dislike most of Genta's (& inspired by)70's onwards designs - Royal Oak, Nautilus etc. Emperor's New Clothes imho....so the PRX is pretty meh.

Also don't like round indices ( submariner, skx etc)....so most divers I find pretty meh because of that.

I realise I'm in the minority 🤣

Never meet your heros I guess.

Honestly - this one:

Image

I’m not entirely enamoured with it. I went for a vintage Seiko, found a nice one that was up my street, but I’ve never worn it. I don’t see what all the fuss is about.

I‘ll be honest:

Image

I wanted one of these for a while but it’s taken a good few months to warm to it. Partly because it was running +20mins/day so I had to regulate it, and partly because it’s tough finding the right strap that suits it. I might have found one that works with this N.D. Limits blue rubber, but I don’t know. I need some time with it.

There are more, I just won’t bore you all with the details…
