When you've 100% decided on your next watch and then ....

I had absolutely decided that my first watch of 2023 would be a Hamilton Khaki Field Automatic 38mm. I then watched Andrew Morgan's "10 Enthusiast Watches That Are Basically Perfect" video and it was love at first sight for a watch that had passed me by - the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer SSC813P1. These watches couldn't really be more different, I've never really been interested in Seiko and I wasn't interested in a chronograph (apart from a Seagull 1963 due to it's backstory and general weirdness), but now I have a dilemma.

Ah, the joys . . .

We reviewed your file. You are cleared to purchase both.

Seriously: Would just waiting a little longer help the question to settle and an answer to emerge? I find that my impulses create artificial urgencies, and that liberating myself from them and simply allowing myself to breathe can clarify things. You may find that the Seiko really does represent a new and overwhelming interest, or you may find that once the “Holy cow, a new THING” wears off, you recall the reason why you wanted the Hamilton over all others.

And remembering that, in this case, you can’t lose either way.

Now I’m off to research that Chronograph…

·

Buy the Hamilton, then wait and save to buy the seiko later, they're not going anywhere their popularity will ensure continued production.

·

Bottom line is YOU are the one making the choice-not some YouTuber.

Don't let influencers get in the way of an already made decision.

·

Consider use case. Are you soon to be deployed to Nazi Germany? Are you in charge of timing laps for formula 1?  The answer will present itself.

·

I highly recommend the Hamilton. Can't speak either way regarding the Seiko.

·

Both look awesome!! The Hamilton is also on my short list. I have a cheaper field watch I started with and really like it so I feel like going with the Hamilton is a no Brainer for me. I also have a few Seikos and all have been great buys!!

I have a couple of Laco Fliegers so not sure how the posting to Nazi Germany would go 😂

I think you have to be aware that most YouTubers are influenced themselves. In order to get access to create content they have to maintain relationships and while this may not give way to direct bias I’m sure there is a lot of unconscious bias. It’s hard to stay neutral when someone gives you early access to a product or gives it to you. When everyone says it’s great it’s a good time to ask if the product has been aggressively marketed by the manufacturer or if it really is good. Golden rule, put it on your wrist before you buy. Another cool thing to do is look in the window, does it still ‘pop‘? i went to another town just after xmas to look at 3 watches, I didn’t buy either, 2 were bigger on my wrist than I expected (both Grand Seiko’s) and another I didn’t bond in the flesh.

Owning both of these watches, I can honestly say, without hesitation, that if I had to choose between one of them I would choose… both.

Why fight it?  You know you're gonna get both.  😀

(Edit:   I have the mechanical, not the automatic. But my thumb and my index finger have never been in better shape.)

Hamilton first obvs then that seiko....message ends.....

·

I agree with those who say get the Hamilton. After a little while, if you still want the Seiko, go for it. The Seiko will also drop in price over time.

·

Hamilton for me. In fact, it's going to be next watch. The first of 2023 will be the Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical 38mm - just deciding on either the black PVD or Polar 🤔.

·

Interesting, very different watches. The Hamilton looks more like a daily wear to me. I tended when using one watch primarily to wear family simple three-hand date watches, like it. The leather strap should be comfortable, but will wear. In daily use, I’d get about 12-18 months of wear, but straps are easy to replace. Chronographs are more ‘fun’, but the timing functions are rarely used and they are generally bigger and more complex.  Steel bracelets are comfortable if well fitted and will last longer. I’m sure there’s a weight difference between these two, so I’d try before you buy for fit, look and comfort. Good luck, these are both good watches.

Don't worry, I'm too old to be influenced that easily. I only mentioned that video because it was the one that brought the Seiko to my attention.

Yes, I would be trying both of these on before making a decision, too much money to spend "blind".

That's why when I couldn't decide between a type A Flieger and a type B I just bought both 😂

I have a slightly different perspective on this... Yes you were sold on the Hamilton, but then you were "exposed" to the Seiko and now its triggered something in you.  That is exactly what this hobby is about.  Its about learning who you are, what you like, how your tastes evolve and enjoying that journey.   So I think by all means let people influence you and let that be one more data point to consider!!!  Having said that...I have a handful of watches I am lusting for also, well above the Seiko price point and this Seiko interrupted it!  Now I can't get it out of my head... its a beautiful watch.  Something about that dial keeps drawing me in...

·

I’m sure the Seiko is great. I love Seiko and own 2 myself, but for me, personally, a quartz chronograph is far less interesting than a full mechanical one. I own the Hamilton KFA, but in 42mm. Absolutely love it. It’s one of my very favorite watches.

"Artificial urgencies"  PERFECT.  Seconding this: if I force myself to sleep on it for a good week or so, things become right-sized.

·

The good news is, neither of these are going anywhere.  It gets a bit harder with LEs or special vintage pieces....

I have the Hamilton (mechanical, but love) and the Prospex is on my short list for this year.  Get one and then save up and get the other one.  Whichever you start with, guaranteed enjoyment.

Given that your profile describes you as engaged in a struggle between minimalism and covetousness, I’m not surprised that this works for you. I’m the same way. You should see what I get like when it’s car buying time.

Hahaha-- something I try to avoid at all costs.  Not at all as enjoyable as a good watch-obsession, for me.
