A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Yellow Gold

Sales kick-offs are always an opportunity to flex those bonus-funded pick-ups. Recently I got to swap my GS SBGY009 for one of my grails - yellow gold A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Small Seconds 35mm - for a day with a friend. Perfect proportions. Effortlessly elegant. A gear-heads dream.

Man!  I thought you'd made an actual permanent swap!

This brand is weird to me. I hold them above Patek or AP, yet I find many of their dials just meh.

But the attention to detail, the craftsmanship and those clear casebacks. Damn. If I ever were on the market for one of their watches Id ask them if there is any way to reverse the wearing experience and have the clear caseback facing up. Dont care what time it is at this point, I'd just want to see and smile at the movement.

100%. The movement is next level. It’s got similar dial appeal to something like a Calatrava. Classic design, beautifully simple but not everybody's jam. Personally, I’d get this over a Sub (which is a similar price). But you wouldn’t buy it as an investment watch.

I'm not enough of a gentleman to wear a A. Lange & Söhne. That a side the watch looks fire especially the bronze/gold.

I’m no gentleman either, but the watch is 🔥

Similar to a sub price?  So around ~$11K?

Nice!  That is a sweet deal, I think.

I think he would’ve needed to also promised his first born in servitude bonded for 4 years to make that  swap permanent… ! 😂

FWIW after a day spent with the SBGY009 he admitted to no longer being a Spring Drive / Zaratsu skeptic.

Just checked ALS website and getting "price available upon request".  Not that I can buy it right away as my budget for pretty much all of 2023 is already spent.  But getting that "opulent" watch (per Mr Porter) is a stretch goal of mine by end of December 2023 or early 2024.

Btw, I visited a Breguet boutique on a recent trip to Milan and boy, are those classic watches gorgeous as well.

Haha Yeah every year as Sales Kickoff comes around I start thinking... Which watch/es am I going to take with me.. a couple of my peers are watch nuts too. Our execs rock some nice pieces too and love to talk about our "ordinary" pieces with us even. I'm like yeah your gold Day date on presidents bracelet is cool... But my $1500 Nomos SE is more rare, more accurate  😎 and I helped design it!

·

A.Lange always have that distinctive look similar to Nomos.  Not many people may like it, but hey that's why we have so many choices of timepiece.  But good gosh their watches are a beauty.

Good not to follow the crowd. I bought my wife a Nomos Orion 33 which she loves. Like the Saxonia, it’s got a very minimalist, Teutonic dial but flip it over and you get this 😍

Very pretty watch!

·

Nice!  But Is the strap you have it on too small for the lug width?

Yes, that's true. But just to be clear - this is not my watch. I think the owner (a friend) thought the brown croc it came on was 'too formal' and wanted to dress it down. Weird given that its a dress watch,  but I didn't spend too much time worrying about the strap :)

Awesome piece!

That is the bomb! Congratulations!

Noticed Glashutte Original got the memo on this and has a gorgeous flipped/reversed line.

·

Nice! This is the 37mm, the 35mm doesn’t have the dots over the markers.

At a watch event here in Seattle last week, a very kind gentleman let me hold his new Lange Saxonia Moonphase for a few minutes. I've always wanted to at least see, let alone hold, a truly haute horology piece. I was stunned by the craftsmanship and the fit and finish of this watch. While this is not the watch I would choose if I could afford a watch at this level, I was amazed at how exquisite it was. Up to last week, I've always said I'd never spend that kind of money on a watch, but now I know I surely would. Just to gaze down on my wrist throughout the day would be a great pleasure that I doubt would fade.

A pleasure to see another Lange owner. Beautiful time piece!
