One Can Dream: The GOAT Grail Watch Thread

Since I’ve started learning about luxury watches, there are many watches that I used to drool over that I don’t think are that special anymore. For some reason I really wanted an Omega Deville Hour Vision that I once saw in a magazine; I also really wanted a Rolex Milgauss GV, and a Zenith El Primero. I still think those watches are cool, but one watch that I thought was super impressive that I would still love to buy one day is the Grand Seiko SBGY003. I know that for us watch enthusiasts, this changes by the minute, but what is your grail watch of the moment? This would be my pick!

I’m looking to start the sexiest, most-desirable grail watch thread that we can all scroll through, for fun and for motivation! What would be your choice?

My photos are taken from Tide + Time, Watchfinder, and the GS website.

This is my grail watch.  There is an absolutely killer deal on one off Chrono24 at the moment, but I ain't gonna pull the trigger.  Told myself that I would wait until March 2024 (an upcoming milestone) before my next purchase, so gonna try to stick to my guns to make the eventual acquisition all the more special.

That SBGY003 is killer, OP!

I had it on my wrist at the boutique in LA; my other half left the store and could not even bear to look at it.  LOL!

For me it would be a fully loaded Panerai like this one from a magazine I already have lying here for five years.

Well, if it’s gonna be my GOAT, might as well go for it all! ALS 1 Perpetual Calendar

For me I think it's the Journe Chronomètre Bleu.

Never gonna have it but sure on my dreamlist

I'm not into the flex culture of Rolex, but there is something about a Rolex with a faded bezel which would probably always be one of my grails.

Many years ago (I'm 35 now), my grandfather, being a very thoughtful man, but not one of financial means, bought me a "Rolex" from a flea market because he thought I would enjoy wearing it. He told me at the time that he wished it were real, but he hoped I would enjoy it all the same. I did for a while, and have since retired it as a sentimental item, but I've always said that one day I'd wear the authentic version of that watch, and that would pay homage to the sacrifices that he made for his family over the years. So, a Rolex Datejust in Oystersteel and yellow gold, is my only true grail watch. Others may be prettier or more valuable, but that'll be the only one I set my sights on and will ensure I get it.

Yeah, I think you’re spot on. He’s probably thinking, “What the hell is this buyer trying to pull on me? Maybe he’s trying to scam me!”

But, yeah, GS divers never hold their value - even GS aficionados tend to hate the divers! I’m sure 18 months from now the SLGA015 will be discounted pretty heavily!

Well, I reached out to the private seller on Chrono24 and asked if he would be willing to consider having the watch sent to a watchmaker, who could certify authenticity, and then release payment to him - to serve as an escrow service, essentially.  Dude came back and simply said, "Sorry no."

Which raises my Spidey-sense.  I mean, guy is offering the watch at $6,500 when MSRP is $11,600!!!  Claims that he bought it in August, but that he realizes that he made a mistake, because it's a "young man's watch" and he won't wear it.

If he's not willing to offer up proof that it's the real deal, then it's gotta be one of those "too good to be true" situations, yeah?  And Chrono24 doesn't provide any protections in the case of a watch from a private seller.

Maybe this is truly God's way of telling me to go with the will power and wait till March 2024!

Yea, I wouldn't do it. Just too good to be true IMO. BTW, of course my SBGA463 is up for sale. Anybody who wants one.

It's pretty shocking to me that I can't think of a grail watch. I'm just enjoying my watches and don't have a super strong desire to upgrade/attain at the moment.

The GS SBGY003 is an absolute stunner, finishing, technical prowess and overall beauty, wow it’s gorgeous

·

Ironically, as a manual wind piece, this is one of those where having the power reserve on the dial itself would probably be most useful, and yet GS moved it to the back of the piece.

But it would give you an excuse to take it off to admire the caseback! 😜
