Tissot PRX vs Maurice LaCroix Aikon

Okay I know this watch battle sounds crazy since the price tags and the quality of both watches differ wildly but hear me out...

You buy either because the Royal Oak or Nautilus tickles your fancy but are unobtainable. So you're probably considering both. Is it inevitable that you go for the Tissot PRX?

It's more affordable, it's better looking IMO and it has captured the hearts of fellow watch nerds whereas the Aikon became hated by watch nerds for some reason.

Has the PRX basically made the Aikon redundant?

Agreed, I once considered the Aikon but ended up with a PRX. I'd be surprised if I came across someone who did the opposite.

There's also a third option: the Baume and Mercier Riviera. Pricier than the PRX, but in line with the Aikon (if considering grey market pricing). It has a similar style and arguably more heritage. It was released originally in 1973, so after the Royal Oak but before the Nautilus.

Great shout! I know very little about Baume & Mercier and from a brief look at the Riviera it's a stunning watch with a great dial. I'll definitely be looking into the Riviera and Baume & Mercier in general. If you have reviewed this one on your blog, please let me know!

haven't had a chance to handle one in person unfortunately, but I'll let u know if I do! I can attest to Baume and Mercier's quality, though. I think they're a very underrated brand with a long history (est. 1830). Fit and finish on the B&M watches I've owned was always top notch.

I do like the Aikon a lot, always have. Probably won’t ever own it, but man is that a good looking watch.

The Aikon is a looker indeed. I got a chance to see it in person. It's even better looking in person. On paper it's too close to the Royal Oak but in person I didn't have that in mind, too busy enjoying the watch!

Yeah, I saw it in the flesh too and it was a knockout.

I really enjoy "playing dressup" with my watches, so watches with integrated bracelets aren't a real high-priority.  If someone put a gun to my head and said I had to buy one of these, I'd go with the Aikon though (in quartz).  Why quartz?  I'd hate to sink cash into servicing a watch I rarely wear.  :-)  Why Aikon over PRX?  The design of the PRX really leans-in t the fact that the bracelet is integrated.

Would love to buy a PRX but I wouldn't keep it since has butterfly clasp without microadjustments.

Have owned the Aikon 39mm blue dial. Absolutely magnificent watch and was able to get a good fit despite the butterfly clasp.

Formex's butterfly clasp with built in microexpansion is a game changer. LOVE mine.

I actually prefer Aikon’s design over th PRX, the RO and the Nautilus. I know it’s kind of derivative, but for some reason I can‘t explain I fell in love with it and had to buy it. I’ve seen the other watches I mentioned in person (except the Nautilus)and I didn’t fall in love with them.

Weighed the pros and cons, I like Tissot and had my eye on the PRX I also had my eye on the Aikon. I eventually chose the Aikon, and it sits real pretty. Now that I made that choice I might get the PRX as well, just because I can and be happy with both.

·

Actually moved forward on the PRX auto with green dial. Got it new from an AD for $488. Couldn't pass up giving it a try at that price.

·

I once flirted with the Aikon 39mm, but I do share the sentiment that the PRX has neutered that previous interest. I haven’t yet picked up the Tissot, but that‘s purely because I’m trying to curtail my impulse buys. #tissot

Ordered the Aikon GMT. So from what i gathered

  • Aikon feels much more quality than PRX, PRX is simple and elegant, however it feels like it's worth, not a bad thing, but you wont get more than what you paying for. For Aikon finishing you do feel a few thousand above its price point (but Aikon do cost more than PRX)
  • GMT model has inspiration from both RO only on the integrated bracket part. and Rolex Explorer on the dial colour, but with Aikon's own bezel style that you wont see in others its ceramic with metal coverings part of the ceramics. PRX is purely RO design, and they simplified it to their own language.
  • I feel that PRX is more or less only a fashion watch, Aikon has more Utilities,  200m / 300m water resistance depending on model, its more a beater watch for me, will take it to adventure and travel, wont mind putting scratches on it. the design can mix easily with more strap options.
