It's like any obscure hobby where people just aren't interested. I mean, even average Joes who don't care about watches in a general sense are hardly even wearing watches any more. So to even want to wear one is something, let alone know anything about them.
Some watches are harder to read than others, yes. But I find in most scenarios, I already know what time it is... it's there on my PC screen, it's there on my car console, it's there on my phone, etc. When I'm looking at my watch, it's more to admire the look of this jewelry, for want of a better term, on my wrist. And if it's a rare occasion where I'm needing to read the time, if it takes an extra second or two, it's not that big a deal cos I'm seldom doing it.
When people get hugely uptight about 42mm watches being "massive wrist canons" and go off about them, I think of something like this and just blink at them... and blink again.
I get it completely. And I'm a Seiko fan. In a similar vein, there are many obscure watches for extreme amounts of money out there, and they're arguably very good, but even if I had the cash for them, I don't think I could wear a watch that 99.999% of people would look at and assume was a $20 petrol station special - precisely because the brand's so obscure.
You could play a game with family and friends - Petrol Station Special or $10,000 Watch? And I reckon most people wouldn't get over a 50-50 hit rate cos they're just guessing.
