Why I bought another Oris watch...

Hi watchfam! I just received my second oris watch and wanted to share a few pics and opinions about this piece and the brand in general ๐Ÿ˜‰

I started watchcollecting in 2017 and my first watches were seikos (turtle, seiko 5s), timexes and casios ๐ŸคŸ a year later in 2018 i aquired my first swiss divewatch, the oris 65 movember edition. Till today this is still my favorite divewatch in my collection because of its classic design language (the 60s just had the best watch designs imo ๐Ÿ˜‰) now 4 years later i picked up another oris divewatch... this time the more modern design in the lineup from oris: the aquis date relief with a sunray cherry red dial ๐Ÿ’

I know red dials are for a lot of watch enthusiasts a no go and if you had ask me a few months or a year ago if i would ever pick up a red dial watch i would probably have said: "hell no!" ๐Ÿ‘น

But what changed the last few days that i suddendly pulled the trigger on a red dial and a second oris? Here are some thoughts for what I think was quite an impulsive buy:

  • I was looking at my entire collection (you can see it in my profile) and I came to the conclusion that it is maybe a little bit boring and a poppy colour or odball piece would make sense to add. Most of my pieces are classic designs (speedy, willard, explorer, bb58...). Only one white dial, most of them black...
  • Then a few days ago I stumbled across a new release from oris: the aquis in 43.5mm with this cherry red dial. I thought: hmmm that looks cool. Always wanted a steel bezel diver in the collection...but this one is too big for my 6.5 inch wrist ๐Ÿค” i read that this release was a follow up from the 41.5 release exactly one year ago. The perfect size i thought ๐Ÿค— seems like the 41.5 release totally went under the radar for me... from there it began: reading, hunting, watching youtube videos about it and thinking about it 24/7 ๐Ÿ˜† you probably know what i am talking about ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ
  • Before i pulled the trigger i had these thoughts: another divewatch?? My collection is already so dive heavy. Another oris? Till now i was collecting with this rule "one watch per brand" I thought: maybe it is time to break the rules after 5 years in this crazy hobby ๐Ÿ˜‰

In the End I am glad now I got this piece... it is just stunning! The Red dial is just mesmerizing in bright sunlight. In bad light it almost looks like black. Also the quality of the bezel action and bracelet is really good. Oris just nails the under 2k price range. I think you can't do much better. If a new watchgeek would ask me: what should i get for around 1.5k? I would advice him easyly to oris. Imo it is just the best enthusiast brand and one of the best value propositions out there.

Now the honeymoon phase begins ๐Ÿค— i will take this piece to vaccation this summer and will keep you updated with wristshots how it will hold up.

Maybe you want to share your opinions below about red dial watches and oris in general ๐Ÿ˜‰ do you like them? Would you add one to the collection? Is there a better brand in this price range than oris?? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thx! Feels so good to be in good company here and know that i am not the only watch maniac with impulsive buying disorder and questions afterwards if the decisions were right ๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ‘Š

Red is where it is at. Nice addition.

Btw: for my orises i prefer the non inhouse movements to keep the entire service costs of my collection down. I just payed over 800 bucks for my speedy service a few weeks ago ๐Ÿ˜“ so i want to have a healthy mix of inhouse and non inhouse for manageable service costs ๐Ÿ˜‰

That makes a good pair. Totally different design. I had the Aquis in 39mm and could definetely see myself with a 65.

So many cool options in the 65 line ๐Ÿค™ which one would you pick?

The original release did not go unnoticed by me (as it was created, I believe, as a result of customer feedback from a COVID-era Red Bar virtual meetup between enthusiasts and Oris' brass) and I've been eyeballing this one for at least a year now. My big issue is the movement. I have another Oris and I really want this Aquis to be released in a Caliber 400 version. That's the only thing holding me back. Love the color, love how the 41.5 wears on my wrist, love the relief bezel. But I have a Big Crown Pointer Date with the exact same movement in it and if I'm getting a new watch, it has to be unique for my collection and the only thing about this model that is unique is the dial. The brand and movement I already have in the collection. But this is a great watch and I'm sure you will love it.

I really like this one. Think it was taken out from the catalogue in -22.

The original! Yes unfortunatly they no longer have the models with the retro numerals. Always liked the deauville blue one... would be a cool looking summer watch ๐Ÿ˜‰

Cool story! Didnt know the red bar crew was involved in this release. I know a lot of people would rather have the new inhouse movement with longer power reserve because 38h is really not much these days... but for me it is fine because i want to keep the service costs of the entire collection at a good average. I already have quite some expensive inhouse movement service costs for my other pieces so the sellita will have to do its job in the 2 oris pieces ๐Ÿ˜‰

Very very good brand and a nice piece for sure. I like the colour of the dial quite a bit actually.

ยท

My Oris 65 was the watch that stayed in my collection for the longest amount of time, until I traded it recently. Oris might be one of the best option if you exclude Swatch Group. Even then Oris is the cool underdog ๐Ÿถ

ยท

Man, the Movember editions are nice... I mean, nice Aquis, but that 65 is my favorite of the two.

Beautiful piece and a nice addition - no need to justify it here! Oris makes some very visually appealing stuff. Getting some diversity in your box makes sense - it could make the whole collection pop more. We (my wife and I) have two Orisโ€˜s - a full size Aquis diver and a much smaller moonphase. Both are very attractive, but the Oris diver is heavy, so I think your slightly smaller case makes sense.ย

Is it just me, or does that bezel ring remind anyone of a Yacht Master?ย

Iโ€™ll tell you, since I started being active on here a few weeks ago, thereโ€™s a word Iโ€™ve heard far too often. โ€œStunningโ€. Every watch is stunning. All the straps are stunning, so are the spring bars. That little cloth they give you to clean your watch with? ย Stunning.ย
ย

But for real, that dial is stunning.ย

ยท

why i bought a 2nd oris...

a question that need not be asked

deliciousย

ยท

Also I find the bracelets on the Oris is really well done!ย

Hereโ€™s my Oris mini collectionโ€ฆ

That cherry red is absolutely gorgeous - congratulations on the addition ! ย The "one watch per brand" rule seems to arbitrary and limiting - buy what appeals to you regardless of brand or style.

I have one Oris in my collection, and I purchased it entirely based on the dial color, which I still think is stunning. Oris makes some of the nicest looking dials IMHO, and their bracelets are so silky smooth.

I don't disagree with this, in theory. But in practice, I only have limited funds. If I bought every watch that appealed to me regardless of brand or style, then I wouldn't be able to experience the kind of diversity I'm seeking in my collection. As much as I like this cherry Aquis, I've had it on my wrist, it's amazing in person, there are other things higher up on my wish list right now.

  1. ย Spring Drive (I have my eye on a SBGE 255)
  2. A watch with a unique case material (Doxa Sub 300 Carbon?)
  3. A nice dress watch (I would love a Reverso)

If I bought the exact model I wanted in each of those categories, then I'm looking at possibly $18K? It might take me a decade to do that, but in the end I will be happier with that end result and I'll get there quicker than impulsively buying a second Oris, no matter how nice I think it is. Everyone collects in their own way, there is no right or wrong and what might seem limiting to one person keeps another person focused on their aspirations.

Are you a colorful personality or are you a black & white personality? ย Colorful people wear colorful accessories. ย As far as too many dive watches go, you can't have too many of something you like. ย Some collectors have nothing but dive watches cause that is their thing. ย The only rule is that if your watch collection isn't making you happy something needs to be changed.

I think i am more a black person. I have worked the last 10 years in an architecture office ๐Ÿ˜„ but sometimes i prefer a good pop of colour in my life ;)

True but i think the yachtmaster one is made from platinum while this one is much cheaper steel ๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿค™

If you already have vintage reiussues like me in your collection i would go for the modern looking aquis... if you have more modern pieces i would go for the d65 ๐Ÿ˜‰ balance is everything imo ๐Ÿค™

Everyone collects in their own way, there is no right or wrong and what might seem limiting to one person keeps another person focused on their aspirations.

I wasn't meaning to imply purchasing every watch that appeals in brand/style, but rather to simply letting your personal ย tastes and preferences be the primary factor in determining what is included in your collection rather than basing a collection on arbitrary categories. For example, if your collection already included a GS quartz that you wanted to keep, applying a "one watch per brand" rule would preclude you from ever getting the GS Spring Drive. I often see posts where people mention something along the lines of "I love the watch, but I've already got 2 divers". If you bypass a watch you love simply because you already have others of the same style/brand in your collection, you could be depriving yourself of the watches that you really want, and ending up with watches whose primary purpose is to fill a void in the collection. I can fully understand wanting diversity in the collection, but I don't think that it should be at the expense of bypassing watches that you really love. If you can do both, then that's obviously a win-win.

Most of us have limited funds, and have to make trade-offs when determining which watches to buy, even though the scale of those limited funds varies from person to person. As you mention, collecting is a personal thing, and everyone needs to follow their own path in determining what to collect. If having a mix of brands and styles is of primary concern, then I suppose it makes sense to avoid any "duplicates". I would personally prefer a collection of watches that I love rather than a collection that follows some arbitrary rules, even if that means multiples of any given brand or style.ย
